"Alright, everyone, this officially marks the start of the school year! We're in our senior year now, so let's get our spirits up!" Li Jianguo announced from the podium. "And one more thing: tomorrow is the start-of-term exam. I believe you all know about it already." 0

"What? We really have to take an exam? I haven't even reviewed!" a student exclaimed. 0

"Yeah, at this rate, I'm going to end up with a zero!" another added. 0

"Now, now, everyone, how could you possibly only score a zero? There's always a chance for a passing grade!" Li Jianguo responded with a smile, trying to lighten the mood. 0

Laughter erupted from the students. 0

"Alright, let's focus! A last-minute effort might just help you score higher than you think." 0

After an hour of class, many students had their heads down on their desks. 0

"What’s going on?" Lin Menghan wondered aloud, eager to find out what the group was discussing behind her back. 0

Xu Nancheng, ever the informant, quickly spilled the beans about their earlier conversation. 0

Lin Menghan felt a mix of shyness and amusement as she listened. They were talking about whether or not they were dating and how awkward it was. Then there was Chen Yi, who seemed to be making things worse for himself. 0

"Hey, Lin Menghan! Why didn’t you buy me those drinks?" Xu Nancheng cautiously nudged her arm. 0

He was referring to the two bottles of milk tea he had been thinking about all class. He couldn't shake off the feeling that maybe she didn't like him anymore. 0

"Guess what?" Lin Menghan teased him with a smile, enjoying his nervousness without giving him a direct answer. 0

"Is it that you don’t like me anymore?" Xu Nancheng ventured timidly, thinking it was the most plausible explanation. 0

"Wrong! Don’t think like that! How could I possibly feel that way?" Lin Menghan's smile faded as she corrected his misunderstanding and playfully tapped his head. 0

Xu Nancheng's mood instantly lifted; he felt reassured that Lin Menghan still liked him. 0

"Keep guessing," she encouraged him. 0

"Could it be that you guys have some sort of deal going on?" Xu Nancheng boldly suggested. 0

He personally thought this possibility was low since he couldn't see what kind of deal those three could have. 0

"Exactly! You’re so smart, Nancheng!" Lin Menghan admired him for figuring it out so quickly. 0

Xu Nancheng was taken aback. "Huh?" 0

"That's how it is! Oh, and I didn't have that much money on me, so I couldn't buy it for you." Lin Menghan explained the whole situation in detail. 0

"So it was you who wanted me to give that speech?" Xu Nancheng suddenly realized, the heavy stone in his heart finally lifting. 0

"Exactly! It's simple; you just need to overcome your timid nature." 0

Xu Nancheng scratched his head. "Lin Menghan, there's something I need to say. You really didn't have to buy those two cups of milk tea. If you had just said a word, I would have definitely gone for it! I always listen to you, no matter what it takes." 0

"Oh, it's just a small issue! Think of it as treating them to something to build rapport!" Lin Menghan thought about it and realized that was indeed the case. She felt quite relaxed about it and didn't say much more. 0

"Oh, and Lin Menghan, let's step outside for a moment!" He hesitated, feeling that discussing such things in front of so many people wasn't ideal. He grabbed her hand and pulled her out. 0

"What is it?" Lin Menghan thought he had something important to say and followed him outside. 0

Xu Nancheng wanted to hold Lin Menghan's hand but was still unsure how to approach it. He didn't mean anything by it; he just wanted to hold her hand simply. The classroom was too crowded, making it inconvenient, so they stepped outside where it was hot and there were hardly any people around. 0

However, before he could even touch her hand, Lin Menghan swatted his away. 0

Seeing her reaction, Xu Nancheng's heart skipped a beat. He immediately lowered his head as if he were a child who had done something wrong. What did I do to upset her? Did I make a mistake? 0

"Huh? Lin Menghan?" He tentatively spoke up, his voice barely above a whisper, filled with a sense of great grievance. 0

Lin Menghan looked at him and didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Why was he so sensitive? It was just a light swat on his hand; it wasn't like she was rejecting him completely. 0

But she didn't want to ignore Xu Nancheng; she just thought he was being overly clingy! 0

Just yesterday, things weren't like this. Now that they had held hands once, it felt like he couldn't let go. If they kept holding hands like this, she would feel shy after all; she was still a girl. Holding hands privately was fine, but doing so openly in broad daylight felt a bit much. 0

Seeing him like this, she didn't want him to feel sad about anything. Before Xu Nancheng could say anything more, she hurriedly explained, "No, it's not what you think! I just feel like you're being too clingy... it's a bit embarrassing." 0

Upon hearing this, Xu Nancheng felt it made sense. All day long, he had been thinking about holding her hand without any sense of shame at all. 0

After all, they weren't even officially together yet. 0

"I'm sorry; I'll be more mindful." He apologized while still keeping his head down. 0

"Oh come on! I'm not angry! Why apologize?" She stood on her tiptoes and patted his head. 0

Feeling the gentle touch on his head brightened his mood significantly, and a smile spread across his face. 0

Lin Menghan thought to herself how much this felt like comforting a child. 0

At that moment, a figure turned the corner from the staircase and happened to witness this scene. 0
