Her eyes sparkled with light, a smile so full it was impossible to hide. Of course, it wasn't just Lin Menghan who was grinning from ear to ear; Xu Nancheng was just as joyful!
The corners of Xu Nancheng's mouth lifted slightly, his eyes filled with affection as he said in the gentlest tone, "Of course! I swear!"
Upon hearing this, Lin Menghan quickly waved her hands, anxious as she replied, "Alright, alright! Who asked you to swear? Don't make promises like that." She felt such vows were inauspicious and worried that something bad might happen.
Xu Nancheng immediately understood and quickly covered his mouth, falling silent. He recalled novels he had read where many side characters faced misfortune due to careless promises.
At that moment, the crowd at the school gate grew larger, the atmosphere becoming more lively. Although they were reluctant to let go of each other's hands, they eventually parted with lingering glances.
After reaching the third floor of the teaching building, they didn't head to their classrooms but went directly to the exam hall to wait for the test to begin. This meant they would soon be separated; for the next two and a half hours, they wouldn't be able to see each other.
"Okay, I'm going up! See you later!" Lin Menghan smiled and waved at Xu Nancheng.
"Yeah! Nancheng, you too. Good luck on the exam!" Lin Menghan waved her hand again, signaling Xu Nancheng to head upstairs since the exam was about to start.
Xu Nancheng waved back in agreement.
The two gazed at each other, their eyes reflecting deep affection and reluctance as if their gazes could weave threads between them. After a long moment, they slowly turned away from each other.
As Xu Nancheng reached the fourth floor, he suddenly felt a light tap on his shoulder. He paused for a moment, wondering who could be tapping him. Could it be Chen Yi or Xu Dong?
Turning around, he found that it was indeed Chen Yi and Xu Dong standing behind him.
Chen Yi wore a smile that seemed more mischievous than friendly. "Nancheng, you can't do that!" he exclaimed.
"Exactly!" Xu Dong chimed in enthusiastically, nodding vigorously.
"What do you mean?" Confused by their cryptic remarks, Xu Nancheng frowned and scratched his head, completely unaware of what they were talking about.
With a sly grin on his face, Chen Yi continued, "We all saw what just happened between you and your sister." He deliberately elongated his words, his smile growing even brighter as if he had uncovered a significant secret.
Xu Nancheng's heart raced at this revelation, but he forced himself to remain calm. "What could possibly happen between us? We were just exchanging well wishes!" His tone grew slightly frantic as he tried to mask his inner unease.
However, Xu Dong shook his head and clicked his tongue in mock disapproval. "You two really seem deeply in love; it's like you're parting ways forever for an exam," he teased, his eyes glinting with playful mockery as if he had a unique insight into Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan's relationship.
Xu Nancheng thought this was an exaggeration. Was their bond really that intense? If they were truly parting forever, wouldn't he be heartbroken beyond measure? Shaking his head at such absurdity, he dismissed the thought.
"Not at all! It was just a simple blessing!" He hurriedly explained in hopes of dispelling their doubts. But the more urgent he became in clarifying things, the guiltier he appeared.
Chen Yi and Xu Dong exchanged knowing glances and shared meaningful smiles that left Xu Nancheng feeling even more flustered. He realized that no matter how much he explained himself, these two good friends would not easily believe him.
In reality, there was nothing special about their interaction; it was merely that when they ascended to the third floor, they happened upon Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan lost in each other's gaze. However, instead of interrupting this tender moment, they chose to quietly stand aside and watch without being noticed by either of them.
Xu Dong and Chen Yi looked at each other with skepticism, almost shaking their heads in disbelief. "Well, why don't you tell us then?"
"Everything went smoothly with the exam," Xu Nancheng replied, his tone no longer gentle and full of anticipation, but rather mechanical, as if he were reading from a script.
Upon hearing this, the two shook their heads and sighed. "Ah, it turns out that a brother without a girlfriend is indeed a sad case! I’m afraid our sister thinks the same way. It’s really disheartening!"
After saying this, they suddenly stopped, patted Xu Nancheng on the shoulder, and laughed. "Alright, alright, we were just joking! Nancheng, make sure to do well on the exam; you don’t want our sister to think you’re not impressive!"
Seeing their tone return to normal, Xu Nancheng finally relaxed and said, "Don’t worry; you both need to do well too."
Not long after entering the examination room, a female voice came through the intercom announcing that the exam had begun and that candidates should start answering questions.
At the sound of the command, students began to write furiously, although some could be seen burying their heads in sleep at the sound of the bell.
The first exam was Chinese language. For a seasoned scholar like Xu Nancheng, despite his poor verbal communication skills, his written performance would not disappoint. He calmly tackled each question, reading the prompts carefully and seriously.
As time ticked away, suddenly there was a rustling sound as Xu Nancheng flipped over his answer sheet. This flipping wasn’t about turning over the test paper; it was about turning over the answer card, leaving only the essay section on the back.
The classmate sitting next to Xu Nancheng was deeply engrossed in classical Chinese literature. Hearing the sound, he looked up and glanced sideways at Xu Nancheng. He happened to see that Xu Nancheng's answer card was already filled with answers while his own remained blank. This classmate couldn’t help but ponder how this guy managed to finish so quickly when he still had most of his card left to complete!
However, Xu Nancheng was unaware of the immense psychological pressure his actions had placed on this ordinary student. He continued to focus on his own answers.
About half an hour later, as Xu Nancheng looked at his completed essay with a slight smile of satisfaction on his face, he decided not to check his work. First of all, he had already gone through all the questions once and felt confident that all his answers were correct; thus, he didn’t want to waste time checking again. Secondly, he had lost interest in this exam and thought it would be a waste of time to keep looking at it—better to finish early.
But when Xu Nancheng glanced up at the clock, he realized only an hour and a half had passed; there was still an hour left—a long stretch of time ahead of him. This made him feel somewhat helpless and irritated since he had completed all his tasks yet still had to wait an hour before leaving the examination room.
The school rules stated that even if candidates finished their papers early, they were not allowed to submit them ahead of time. The reasoning behind this was to prevent those who finished from disrupting order outside. Xu Nancheng found this rule quite unreasonable but felt powerless to protest; he could only accept it silently.
Bored, he rested his cheek on the desk and tapped his fingers rhythmically on its surface. This action caught the attention of the invigilators, but they said nothing; they merely watched him quietly.
As he continued tapping away, his thoughts began to drift far away—to Lin Menghan.
