"Had it not been for you... you know, that thing... would we have been seen?" Lin Menghan playfully punched Xu Nancheng's arm, her face flushing with shyness. "Which thing? I didn't do anything, I just asked what you meant by that!" Xu Nancheng felt wronged; it seemed they were not on the same wavelength. Lin Menghan was almost exasperated—was he really denying it after what had just happened? How could someone be so irresponsible? She bit her lip, lowered her head, and softly said, "It's about... the kiss you wanted just now." After saying this, her face turned as red as an apple, and she dared not look up at him.
Upon hearing this, Xu Nancheng quickly stopped in his tracks, his face burning all the way to his neck. He looked at Lin Menghan and waved his hands in a panic. "No, no! I promised you that you'd have to agree to that first!"
"But you... you just..." Xu Nancheng thought back to how close they had been earlier, as if he was about to kiss her. But truly, he was just curious about what she meant by that statement. He slowly explained himself, and Lin Menghan felt shy upon realizing that she had been overthinking things. "I... I was wrong!" she said, sounding quite aggrieved, as if it had nothing to do with her.
However, Xu Nancheng was still determined to get an answer from her—or rather, he desperately wanted to know what she meant. "So... what did that statement really mean?"
"It means... it means what you think it means!" Lin Menghan stood there for what felt like ages before finally managing to say this. She looked up at Xu Nancheng several times to gauge his reaction but only saw him staring blankly in shock. Xu Nancheng's mental fortitude wasn't strong enough; upon hearing her words, his heart raced wildly, leaving him unsure of how to respond.
They stood there as if time had frozen. Xu Nancheng gazed at the girl before him, his eyes filled with tenderness and affection. It wasn't until a gentle breeze lifted Lin Menghan's hair and brushed against his cheek, leaving a faint fragrance behind, that he snapped back to reality. Unsure of how to respond and feeling flustered, he mustered up the courage to take a few steps forward and once again held Lin Menghan's small hand.
"Um... Lin Menghan, let's hurry and grab some food; we have an exam this afternoon!" he suggested.
Lin Menghan tried to pull her hand away, blushing as she said, "Nancheng, don’t do that; the teacher will see us." Yet Xu Nancheng seemed unusually bold now; disregarding their surroundings, he leaned closer to Lin Menghan's ear and whispered softly, "Don't worry, Lin Menghan; even if the teacher sees us, I'll take the blame!" His breath brushed against her ear like a gentle breeze, bringing both a ticklish sensation and a sense of calm.
His words stirred something within Lin Menghan's heart, making her cheeks flush and her heart race. She knew that even if they were caught, Xu Nancheng wouldn't bear too much of the consequences. Still, she softly replied, "Okay." Then she obediently followed him toward the cafeteria. All the while, their hands remained tightly clasped together.
However… when they arrived at the cafeteria—oh no! There was no food left. Staring at the empty food containers while their stomachs protested, they couldn't help but ponder how everyone had eaten so quickly. Indeed… showing off their affection had its consequences! With no other choice left, they headed to the small shop inside the cafeteria to buy instant noodles—better than nothing.
Afterward came the math exam… which finally ended! The two of them stumbled out of the cafeteria and bumped into Wang Xinyue who had just come in for lunch. "Hey! Lin Menghan!" Wang Xinyue greeted them with a bright smile.
"Huh? Wang Xinyue!" Lin Menghan quickly responded with a smile of her own. They had talked for quite a while yesterday and exchanged contact information; both were quite straightforward people so their relationship had warmed up rapidly.
As Wang Xinyue approached them and noticed their lack of energy, she curiously asked, "Why do you two look so down?"
"Ah! Don't mention it; we came too late for lunch and there was no food left!" Lin Menghan sighed in frustration.
"What happened? You two!" Wang Xinyue said with a playful grin before leaning closer to Lin Menghan and whispering teasingly, "Did you two go off somewhere lovey-dovey and forget about eating?"
Lin Menghan playfully swatted at her arm in embarrassment. "Stop it! How could that be true?" But her eyes betrayed her shyness.
Wang Xinyue immediately understood; clearly something romantic had happened between them! However, she was still shocked that someone who usually kept to herself like Lin Menghan could make such an impression on Xu Nancheng—a super studious type who rarely engaged with others. She then shot a probing glance at Xu Nancheng which made him feel uncomfortable.
"Alright then, let's eat!" she said hurriedly as she moved ahead.
Wang Xinyue pulled Lin Menghan aside with a knowing smile on her face. "Hey, seriously though; your boyfriend is quite interesting!"
Lin Menghan's face flushed red but she stubbornly retorted, "Who said he's my boyfriend? He's not!" Though she was bold in many ways, she still felt shy and reserved about such matters.
"Oh really? Is he not your boyfriend? You two are already reciprocating feelings; what more do you want?" Wang Xinyue teased further.
"That's not true! He hasn't even officially confessed yet! So it doesn't count!" Lin Menghan's voice trailed off as her cheeks grew even redder.
"Haha! What confession? I think it's you who wants it more!" Wang Xinyue laughed wickedly while continuing to poke fun at Lin Menghan.
"Ugh! You're so annoying!" Lin Menghan exclaimed bashfully as she lunged forward to pinch Wang Xinyue's waist. The two immediately erupted into laughter as they playfully tussled together.
After eating lunch came the first evening study session. The sun was nearly setting; its rays bathed the earth in golden light creating a warm and sacred atmosphere. Xu Dongchen hurriedly found Xu Nancheng and called out excitedly, "Nancheng! Want to go watch the sunset?"
Hearing this made Xu Nancheng furrow his brow; he had already made plans with Lin Menghan to go together. "Um… sorry guys; I promised Lin Menghan I'd go with her."
Upon seeing the girl beside him nodding obediently in agreement made them think twice—oh well! The young couple wanted some time alone together anyway; they wouldn’t intrude on that.
"Alright then, Nancheng; enjoy yourselves! We won't disturb you," they said as they prepared to leave when one of them called back from behind: "Oh… sorry we didn’t wait for you guys at lunch."
Xu Nancheng apologized because he feared this might create distance between them due to his actions earlier.
"Oh come on! There's no need for apologies! Eating with our little sister is no big deal!" They patted Xu Nancheng on the shoulder reassuringly before leaving.
Once they were gone, Xu Nancheng tightly held onto Lin Menghan's hand as they dashed down the corridor towards the west wing’s long corridor. When they finally stopped running, the sight before them took their breath away. The sun hung low in the sky but still illuminated half of it above them; its warm glow reflected off nearby buildings creating dazzling golden light that made everything seem even more radiant.
"Wow! It's so beautiful!" Lin Menghan exclaimed excitedly with wide eyes fixed on the sunset sky while stretching out her hands toward it as if trying to grasp that fleeting moment of beauty.
"Yeah! It really is stunning!" Xu Nancheng agreed wholeheartedly but struggled to find words that could express how he felt inside—he could only let out genuine admiration for such beauty.
"If only we had a camera! I want to capture this moment!" As she admired the view around them filled with longing regret over not having a phone handy to record this memory forever.
Hearing Lin Menghan’s wish made Xu Nancheng ponder for a moment before gently ruffling her hair and asking softly: “Do you really want to take pictures?”
“Yes!” Her lips curled into a smile as she nodded eagerly while looking up at him with hopeful eyes—after all what girl doesn’t love taking photos?
“Alright then! I’ll help you!” He replied warmly before walking over towards Chen Yi nearby giving him a light tap on his shoulder saying: “Yi Ge! Can I borrow your phone? Lin Menghan wants some pictures!”
Xu Nancheng knew Chen Yi appeared honest but often broke rules by sneaking his phone into school without permission—currently busy taking pictures himself when he saw who approached him without hesitation handed over his phone saying cheerfully: “Do we even need permission? Just take it whenever!”
Feeling warmth swell within him at such camaraderie from friends made Xu Nancheng sincerely thank Chen Yi before quickly taking hold of the phone rushing back behind where Lin Menghan stood gently stroking back some strands of hair whispering: “Lin Menghan! Look what I got!”
“Wow! You really got one!” Her face lit up with surprise and excitement shining brightly through those sparkling eyes!
“Come on! Let me take some beautiful photos of you!” As he spoke he stepped back adjusting angles while raising up camera ready for action!
Lin Menghan elegantly leaned against railing slightly tilting sideways gazing towards sky—the sunlight cascading down upon her enveloping like golden aura around figure making everything seem dreamlike!
With a crisp “click” sound captured forever within screen displaying enchanting image radiating charm unique only belonging solely unto herself!
Following this momentous occasion Xu Nancheng continued snapping several more exquisite shots each revealing different facets showcasing allure gracefulness inherent within every pose taken!
Finally handing back phone saying: “Lin Menghan! What do you think?”
Xu Nancheng’s eyes sparkled filled anticipation hoping for praise yet received only shake from head indicating dissatisfaction instead: “Not good!”
