This was a tradition in their class: as soon as the exams were over, they would gather for the first self-study session that evening to compare answers and estimate their scores. They were warned not to fall into the habitual thinking of middle school, where finishing an exam meant freedom.
Sure enough, it wasn't long before Guo Jianguo walked over with several sheets of paper. "Hey, everyone! Now that the exams are done, let's not just mess around. We need to check for any gaps in our knowledge. Come on! Let's compare answers and see how we did!" He waved the papers around, creating a rustling sound that disrupted the students' focus, causing them to feel anxious.
As per the usual routine, he announced, "I'll write the multiple-choice questions on the blackboard. You can check your answers yourself. For the open-ended questions, I'll project them so you can see and score yourselves!" With that, Guo Jianguo picked up a white chalk and began writing on the blackboard with a series of sharp taps. His handwriting was neat and precise, each stroke reflecting his seriousness and diligence.
As he wrote, the atmosphere in the classroom grew tense. Students raised their heads to watch the blackboard, their eyes fixed on the questions and answers gradually appearing. Their expressions varied—some were nervous, some excited, while others looked a bit anxious.
When the first answer appeared on the board, students began to murmur quietly among themselves. Some were secretly relieved to find they had answered correctly, while others shook their heads in frustration. Soon after, the second and third answers followed suit, and students' emotions began to rise.
"Oh wow! I got all the multiple-choice questions right!" Suddenly, an excited voice broke the silence in the classroom. Everyone turned to look at the student who had cheered, their eyes filled with envy and congratulations. This student sat proudly at his desk, a beaming smile on his face.
At that moment, another voice rang out: "Huh? Did you write down the wrong answers? I can't match any of mine!" The crowd turned to see Xu Dong, who always exuded confidence but now wore a frown of disbelief. Laughter erupted among the students, filling the classroom with a joyful atmosphere.
Guo Jianguo glanced at Xu Dong and smirked slightly before saying, "Well then, that must be your problem." This remark sent everyone into fits of laughter while Xu Dong's face turned red with embarrassment.
As time passed, all the multiple-choice answers were written on the blackboard. Students felt a mix of joy and worry—joy for those who performed well and worry for those whose results were disappointing. Fortunately for Xu Dong, aside from that one outrageous question, he had done reasonably well.
Xu Nancheng had just finished checking his answers when Lin Menghan hadn't even started asking yet. Guo Jianguo rushed over with a smile and gently asked, " Nancheng, how did you do this time?"
The reason he called him Nancheng was threefold: first, he consistently ranked at the top of their class; second, he had a unique personality; and third, Guo Jianguo used this name to give him some psychological encouragement.
As for why Xu Dongchen also called him Nancheng —it was simply following Guo Jianguo's lead. Before they were separated into different classes in their first year of high school, Xu Nancheng was already known as Nancheng in Guo Jianguo's class. When they were later split into different classes but remained together again in this one, Xu Dongchen heard Guo Jianguo call Xu Nancheng by that name and decided to follow suit—though they genuinely liked it!
Xu Nancheng looked up at Guo Jianguo with a hint of shyness and quietly replied, "I think I did okay."
Upon hearing this, Guo Jianguo shot him an approving glance. "Good job! Keep it up!" He gave Xu Nancheng's shoulder a hearty pat as a sign of affirmation and encouragement.
At this point, Guo Jianguo turned his attention to Lin Menghan nearby; he was curious about how this new student was faring compared to Xu Nancheng.
Meanwhile, Lin Menghan sat with her head down beside him, fiddling with her pen while her exam paper lay off to the side. She stared blankly at her desk surface as if lost in thought.
Guo Jianguo tapped on the table lightly. "Lin Menghan! How did you do?"
Startled, Lin Menghan shot her head up as if she had been caught doing something wrong.
"I mean, how do you feel about your performance?" Guo Jianguo patiently repeated his question without changing his tone.
Lin Menghan fiddled with her fingers and tilted her head slightly before responding hesitantly, "Um... I think I did okay... maybe around..." She trailed off as she realized she had been daydreaming just moments before.
In an instant, Guo Jianguo's eyes sparkled with golden light, and a broader smile spread across his face. "Are you sure?" He could hardly believe that this new student was so powerful, prompting him to ask again.
"Yes, as long as there are no major issues, that's about it," Lin Menghan confirmed.
"Great! You two really make a good match!" he declared straightforwardly, affirming Lin Menghan's strength and the couple's compatibility.
This drew the attention of those around them, and the classroom fell into a hushed silence as everyone turned to see what was happening.
Upon hearing this, both of them noticed the gazes from their classmates and instantly blushed. Lin Menghan lowered her head and spoke softly, "No, no, we’re not dating." After a moment's pause, she added, "He’s just a friend... um, that's it!"
Xu Nancheng couldn't help but think to himself, "What do you mean 'just a friend'? She's definitely my girlfriend!"
Having weathered many storms, Guo Jianguo had long seen through the relationship between the two. If he didn't have that insight, how could he possibly hold his position? He simply chose not to expose them; his earlier comments were half-joking and half-serious.
"Oh, I was just joking! You two can continue your discussion!" Seeing Lin Menghan's flustered expression only made his smile grow wider.
As a teacher and a person, he certainly had his human side. He had told his students in their first year that dating in high school was not allowed because it could interfere with their studies. "Focus on your learning; who cares what you do? If you want to date, go ahead and date several at once—no one will stop you."
That too was said partly in jest and partly as a statement of principle; after all, the latter part was not something to be taken lightly!
After finishing his remarks, he walked away with his hands behind his back, leaving Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan feeling utterly bewildered in the wind.
