The group of students finally endured the late self-study session, and even before the bell rang, many were rustling around, packing their things. Among them was the class monitor and the discipline committee member. Despite being an elite class, students in this small county town tended to be a bit more relaxed.
Xu Nancheng was not usually one to rush to pack up and leave, but this time he was more anxious than anyone else in the class. He longed for a moment alone with Lin Menghan, to enjoy each other's company and share some warm moments together.
As soon as the bell rang, he was already prepared, eagerly calling out to Lin Menghan beside him, "Let’s go, Lin Menghan!"
Lin Menghan had been looking forward to this moment; she had already organized her books early on. Hearing Xu Nancheng's call, she didn't hesitate to grab his hand and walked out of the classroom.
Once they stepped outside the campus, they entered a world that was free and tranquil. At ten o'clock in Ying Cheng, it wasn't as brightly lit as other bustling cities; only the dim streetlights illuminated the streets. After turning left at the intersection in front of the school, they found themselves in an almost deserted area, making the street eerily quiet.
Hand in hand, they strolled down this quiet street, their heartbeats quickening and breaths becoming more rapid. Xu Nancheng unconsciously tightened his grip on Lin Menghan's small hand.
Feeling his grip tighten, Lin Menghan tilted her head slightly and tugged at his hand while looking at him. "Nancheng, you're hurting me!"
"Oh no, I'm sorry, Lin Menghan!" He hurriedly loosened his grip just a little, trying not to hold on so tightly. Looking at Lin Menghan's rosy and soft face made him swallow hard; he leaned in closer.
Seeing his intentions, Lin Menghan called out softly, "Nancheng," before closing her eyes. Soon after, she felt a tickling sensation on her back that gradually tightened. The sound of hurried breaths filled her ears, and after a while, she felt warmth on her forehead.
Xu Nancheng held her tightly, burying his head in her neck and inhaling her scent. "Lin Menghan smells so good!" He then kissed her forehead multiple times.
He really wanted to kiss Lin Menghan's rosy lips but felt that at their age it might not be appropriate; thus he settled for kissing her forehead instead.
At that moment, Lin Menghan was also feeling flustered and confused; deep down she still retained a bit of rationality and shyness. She trembled slightly as she felt Xu Nancheng's passion and affection wash over her, filling her heart with sweetness and emotion. Although Xu Nancheng hadn't kissed her lips, those gentle kisses made her feel incredibly comfortable.
After finishing those tender kisses, he turned his lips to Lin Menghan's ear and whispered softly in a tone only she could hear, "I just really like you!"
Lin Menghan, already shy by nature, blushed even more and lowered her head with a playful pout. "But don’t hold me so tightly; it hurts!"
"I was wrong! Han Bao! Please forgive me!" Xu Nancheng quickly grasped Lin Menghan's shoulders with both hands. Her plea for mercy was so earnest that it left Lin Menghan unsure of how to respond.
Standing there listening to his sweet yet slightly cheesy words left her feeling flustered. Xu Nancheng thought she didn’t want to forgive him and became increasingly anxious as he looked around for a way to comfort her.
Suddenly, he spotted a shop not far away still lit up. In this city, it was indeed rare for a store to be open at this hour.
It was just a cake shop. Xu Nancheng's eyes lit up. "Hey! Right! Girls usually love sweets! This is perfect! My romantic evening is saved!"
"Lin Menghan! Lin Menghan! Look over there! There's a cake shop! Do you want to go?" He excitedly pointed out the cake shop to her.
Following his gaze, Lin Menghan saw the shop nearby with its lights on; her eyes sparkled with excitement.
"Should we buy a small cake?" Seeing that she seemed interested made Xu Nancheng eager to seize the moment.
"Yes!" Before he could finish speaking, she eagerly nodded her head. "Let’s hurry! Nancheng! If we don’t go soon they’ll close!"
She pulled Xu Nancheng's hand and ran towards the shop.
"Come inside," but there was no one there. The two couldn't help but feel strange. How could a shop be open in the middle of the night with no one around?
Xu Nancheng felt a wave of disappointment wash over him. He had hoped to impress Lin Menghan, but with no one around, he hesitated about whether to leave. Just then, Lin Menghan called out, "Hello? Is anyone here? We want to buy a cake!"
Her voice was not too loud, just enough to be heard without disturbing anyone.
Before long, a cheerful woman in her twenties rushed over, smiling brightly. "Oh dear! I'm so sorry! Are you two here to order a cake?"
Xu Nancheng, who had been ready to leave in disappointment, suddenly felt hopeful. Tonight's plans for happiness were saved!
"Yes!" Lin Menghan nodded enthusiastically.
"Which kind would you like? You have to tell me what flavor you want; I can't just guess!"
Lin Menghan turned to Xu Nancheng, who was still in a daze, and smiled at him. She took his hand in both of hers and asked, "Nancheng, what do you want?"
"It's for you," he replied. He wasn't picky and didn't want to make a fuss. He felt like he was the one at fault and didn't want to appear choosy.
"Are you sure? Then I can order whatever I like!" Lin Menghan teased again, receiving the same answer from him.
She turned back to the woman. "Sister, I'll have a strawberry cake!"
"A strawberry cake? Sure thing! Just wait a moment!" The woman's voice was sweet and gentle as she walked away to prepare the order.
"Can I watch you make it?" Lin Menghan ran over to the woman and looked at her with pleading eyes.
