So she walked alongside Wang Xinyue, while Xu Nancheng was in for a tough time dealing with Xu Dong's relentless questions.
" Nancheng, how far have you and your sister gone?" Xu Dong's curiosity bubbled up. Although he was casually leaning against Xu Nancheng, he turned his head to look directly into Xu Nancheng's eyes.
Xu Nancheng hesitated; this was not something easily discussed. However, out of brotherly loyalty, he chose to respond, albeit awkwardly.
"What are you talking about? Nancheng! You're my idol!" Chen Yi, who was nearby and not particularly enthusiastic, couldn't help but feel a pang of envy. After all, he had been with Shen Yaoqi for so long and they had only held hands, and now he wasn't even sure if things would work out.
"Well..." Xu Nancheng didn't know what to say at that moment; he just mumbled something and scratched his head awkwardly.
"What do you mean 'well'? At this rate, you're catching up with everyone else in the world! And yet you two are still so lovey-dovey every day," Xu Dong mercilessly pointed out. They had seen the two together before without much thought, but now it was undeniable!
As they entered the classroom, they found it eerily empty. Why was it so quiet? It turned out that all the students had rushed to the office to check their exam results, leaving only a handful behind—those who either had their own phones or were borrowing someone else's.
Xu Nancheng and his friends fell into the latter category; they were particularly timid about checking their scores. So they decided to sneak up to the back mountain of the school. Chen Yi looked around cautiously, observing his surroundings with a guilty expression as he whispered, "You all better keep an eye on me. If we get caught, it's over! I bought this phone with my own money!" He was genuinely afraid of being caught; if discovered, he figured he wouldn't be able to touch his phone for the entire senior year.
"Don't worry, Old Li won't catch us. He's too busy dealing with his own problems to bother with you," Xu Dong scoffed dismissively before letting out a derisive sound.
Then he opened his phone and skillfully entered his name and exam number. A few large numbers popped up on the screen: below them were detailed scores for each subject and an overall ranking—third in the grade.
Seeing this result, he let out a sigh of relief and murmured to himself while patting his chest, "Not bad at all."
He then passed the phone to the others. "Check it yourself, but be careful."
The second one was Xu Dong. He took the phone, bowed slightly in gratitude before checking his score: fifth in the grade.
He thought to himself that it felt pretty good; after all, he had given away some points but only dropped one rank. His confidence surged again.
"Hey son, how come you lost more points than I did yet you're only one rank below me?" Chen Yi exclaimed in disbelief, feeling like his own score suddenly lost its appeal.
"Wow! Class monitor, your score is amazing!" Wang Xinyue said with admiration, practically glued to him with her gaze.
Hearing this made Xu Dong a bit shy as he scratched his head. "Hehe, it’s just luck; don’t flatter me." He then handed the phone over to Wang Xinyue.
She examined it closely and realized she only scored a few points less than them. Instantly feeling embarrassed compared to her friends.
She actually had her own group of friends whose scores were similar to hers; she had just been hanging out with this group lately.
She sighed inwardly; indeed, when scores are unequal, comparisons should be avoided.
Xu Dong seemed to sense her thoughts and patted her shoulder. "Wang Xinyue, scores aren't everything. Just because you’re not doing as well academically doesn’t mean we can’t hang out together! We can help you out or reach out when we need something." He remained as open-hearted as ever, treating everyone equally.
"Ha! So now you're acting like the class monitor?" Chen Yi shot him a disdainful glance.
"You looking for a fight? I'm just concerned about her because she's a girl, what's wrong with that?" Xu Dong retorted, unwilling to back down.
"Is that concern genuine? Or do you have a crush on her?" Chen Yi leaned closer to Xu Dong, whispering softly so that only Xu Dong could hear.
Xu Dong paused for a moment, then quickly realized what Chen Yi was implying. He swallowed his words and fell silent.
"Wow! Nancheng, look at me!" Lin Menghan exclaimed, waving her arms excitedly as she hurriedly handed her phone to Xu Nancheng, eager for him to see.
She wasn't just happy about her high score; it was because she could share this moment with Xu Nancheng.
Of course, Xu Nancheng was just as thrilled to see it. He felt as if he had achieved the same success himself.
"You're amazing!" he exclaimed in excitement, pulling Lin Menghan into an embrace and ruffling her hair.
"Ahem, Nancheng, this is still a public space," Xu Dong reminded them, noticing the commotion nearby. The two quickly released each other, their faces flushed.
There were only a few people around in the back mountain, so they weren't too worried about being overheard.
However, they were still startled by Lin Menghan's earlier shout. A classmate whose name they hadn't even heard before had actually scored high. Typically, the top scorer in their grade only reached around that level.
As a result, surprised glances were exchanged among them, and discussions began to circulate.
Once the commotion in the back mountain settled down, Xu Nancheng picked up his phone to check the scores. As he watched the loading circle spin on the screen, the results gradually appeared: score, first in the grade.
