Several people had grown accustomed to Xu Nancheng's level of skill, feeling that there was nothing particularly special about it. They casually echoed a few words before losing interest in the matter. However, only Lin Menghan, the young lady, displayed an unusual excitement and enthusiasm.
"Wow! Nancheng, you are amazing!" Lin Menghan gazed at Xu Nancheng with sparkling eyes, a golden glimmer shining within them. Without hesitation, she leaped towards him and wrapped her arms tightly around him.
Xu Nancheng felt a bit helpless and quickly reached out to catch the adorable girl, gently holding her in his embrace. "Lin Menghan, there are others here too!" he said softly.
Upon hearing Xu Nancheng's gentle reminder, Lin Menghan's face instantly flushed with embarrassment. She shyly let out a soft gasp and quickly released her hold.
Dating in high school often invites gossip from others. If they were caught on camera and posted on the confession wall, it would be incredibly embarrassing. Moreover, there were many friends present at the scene.
"I was just too excited! You all didn’t see anything that just happened!" Lin Menghan held her breath, looking pitifully at everyone, trying to seek understanding and support.
"What did you discover? Did something happen just now?" Wang Xinyue was the quickest to react, scratching her head with a puzzled expression.
Seeing this, Chen Yi hurriedly played dumb, glancing around. "What? Little sister, what are you talking about? I didn’t see anything."
Only Xu Dong stood there in confusion. "Huh? Didn’t you all—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Chen Yi slapped him on the head. "Ouch!" Xu Dong yelped in pain as he lifted his head. "Hey, you—"
"Do you really not understand or are you pretending? Shut up!" Chen Yi cut him off without giving him a chance to retort.
Wang Xinyue timidly approached Xu Dong and lightly tapped his shoulder. "Class monitor, it was just that Lin Menghan hugged Xu Nancheng," she whispered to him.
And just like that, he obediently fell silent.
"Alright, let’s go! We have to rest soon," Xu Dong hurriedly called everyone back; otherwise, they would be late, and it would be his responsibility.
When they returned to the classroom, it was already buzzing with excitement. Lin Menghan had managed to rank second in their grade, putting immense pressure on the third-place student.
"Lin Menghan, how are you so amazing?"
"Exactly! Lin Menghan!"
"You and Xu Nancheng are truly a match made in heaven!"
"Yes! How did you two get together?"
They all knew about Lin Menghan's academic prowess since anyone could check grades with permission from the teacher. Naturally, they were drawn to such an outstanding student.
As for their relationship, the classmates had long been aware that these two were dating; after all, they spent every day in the same classroom—who wouldn’t know? It could only be said that if one wants to keep something secret, one must refrain from doing it altogether.
As Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan entered the classroom, they both felt their cheeks burning with embarrassment.
The other three had already dashed off to who knows where.
Lin Menghan's cheeks flushed as she stood up from her seat, waving her hand to thank everyone for their compliments. "No, no, it's just that I'm lucky!"
There weren't many people around, just a few, and Lin Menghan could easily handle them. But Xu Nancheng was a different story altogether. He felt as if he had returned to his first year of high school, where he had outperformed everyone else by a wide margin. Yet, he was now cornered by some overly enthusiastic classmates who bombarded him with questions, leaving him at a loss for words as he lowered his head and remained silent.
Now, it was the same situation. Upon hearing his name mentioned alongside Lin Menghan's, he instinctively buried his head deeper into the desk drawer.
"Lin Menghan, how did you and Xu Nancheng get together? He hardly speaks at school, and when I tried to ask him a question, he ignored me!" A curious girl wondered aloud why Xu Nancheng seemed so comfortable talking to Lin Menghan.
Of course, she had no idea that it was all thanks to Lin Menghan's thick skin. If it weren't for her relentless efforts to engage him, Xu Nancheng would likely be just as reserved.
Lin Menghan wouldn't say this out loud; it wouldn't benefit her at all. Besides, what if someone else liked Xu Nancheng? That would only lead to trouble. She had her own little thoughts on the matter.
Scratching her head with an embarrassed smile, she replied, "Well, I think it's a secret between me and Nancheng."
Hearing his name mentioned made Xu Nancheng feel like sinking into the ground. Was it really appropriate to show off like this in front of so many people?
"Come on, just tell us!" someone insisted, their curiosity getting the better of them.
Lin Menghan shook her head firmly. "I really can't say! Who talks about things like that?"
"Exactly! We're just friends; it's not that serious." A timid voice chimed in from the side. "Who said that?" Everyone looked around until they realized it was Xu Nancheng still hiding under the desk.
"Class has started! Why aren't you all back in your seats for lunch? What are you making noise for?" Xu Dong shouted at the group who refused to disperse.
Upon hearing their class leader's authoritative voice, they quickly quieted down and returned to their seats.
Lin Menghan finally breathed a sigh of relief and leaned over her desk with a beaming smile at Xu Nancheng, who was still hiding his face.
She reached out a delicate hand and gently patted his arm. "Nancheng, come on! Look at you!" With that, she couldn't help but burst into laughter, her beautiful eyes sparkling with happiness as she unintentionally broke into a silly grin.
Xu Nancheng felt the soft touch on his arm and an unusual warmth surged through him. Gathering his courage, he lifted his head to meet Lin Menghan's enchanting gaze and managed a goofy smile. "Lin Menghan, you're amazing!"
Upon hearing this compliment, Lin Menghan's face turned bright red, resembling a ripe apple—so cute and enticing. "Not really," she replied modestly. But then a mischievous glint appeared in her eyes as she playfully winked at him. "It's just that Nancheng isn't very capable!"
Xu Nancheng immediately felt flustered; he couldn't let such a comment slide. How could someone say that about a man? He quickly defended himself: "Lin Menghan, I can do it! I spoke earlier too; you have to believe me!" With that, he began making silly faces in an attempt to salvage his image.
Seeing him pout was genuinely amusing to Lin Menghan; she couldn't help but laugh out loud before quickly correcting herself. "Alright, alright! Look at you; of course I believe you!"
Finally managing to wipe the silly expression off his face, Xu Nancheng grinned like an idiot. "I just think Lin Menghan treats me the best!" He wanted nothing more than to be close to her!
"Look at how silly you are; your little mouth is the sweetest!" Lin Menghan thought to herself as she observed him. He seemed so clever yet could be adorably foolish at times!
In front of Lin Menghan, he was charmingly silly; however, in front of others, he appeared rather dull and stiff.
"Cough, cough. You two over there, what are you doing after the lunch break?" Xu Dong's voice echoed in the classroom. It wasn't that he wanted to break up this couple; it was just that everyone else had fallen silent, and their voices stood out a bit too much. The playful banter was hard to ignore, and the growing discontent among the classmates couldn't be overlooked.
