Xu Nancheng, lost in thought, was gently shaken by Lin Menghan's hand on his arm.
"Huh? What?" He finally snapped back to reality, hearing the broadcast and Lin Menghan's singing fading into the background. By the time she called him back, the song had ended, leaving only the bustling noise of their classmates, creating a surreal sense of disconnection.
Seeing Xu Nancheng come to his senses, Lin Menghan eagerly asked, "Nancheng, did you think I sang well?"
Xu Nancheng smiled. Of course her singing was beautiful; otherwise, how could he have been so entranced? "Yeah, Lin Menghan, you sing really well."
"But you were daydreaming! Were you just brushing me off?" Lin Menghan pouted playfully, pretending to be upset.
Xu Nancheng's expression stiffened as he quickly waved his hands. "No! It was just too good! I wasn't daydreaming at all!"
"You see? You can't even argue properly. You're so silly!" Lin Menghan laughed heartily at his flustered expression, unable to keep up her act any longer.
Yet Xu Nancheng had no time to worry about her laughter; after all, if he embarrassed himself, it could mean trouble with his girlfriend. "I wasn't arguing! It really was amazing!"
"Hahaha, Nancheng, I can't keep this up!" She found his panic utterly hilarious; every time she pretended to be angry, he would get all flustered.
"Really, you're always so great!" Just as Lin Menghan was about to finish her compliment, she felt a sudden tickling sensation at her waist that made her jump and let out a shriek.
It was Xu Nancheng. Hearing her tease him about feelings made him tickle her waist in return. "Hahaha, Lin Menghan, you look cute like this!" He laughed at her startled expression.
Lin Menghan tightly clasped her hands together and looked at Xu Nancheng with a pitiful gaze that seemed ready to spill tears at any moment.
Xu Nancheng felt a pang of sympathy and quickly leaned closer to her. "Lin Menghan, did I go too far? Are you okay? Do you need anything?"
"Ah!" Xu Nancheng fell for it again as Lin Menghan tickled him back.
Holding his waist protectively, he glared at the girl in front of him like a bullied little girl. "You always do this!"
"What can I say? I told you before that you're just too easy to trick!" She had intended to say that he was too easy to fool but got interrupted by Xu Nancheng's reaction.
While Xu Nancheng pondered how to respond, Lin Menghan suddenly leaned in closer and softly asked, "Nancheng, do you really think I sing well?"
"Uh-huh!" Seeing Lin Menghan's pretty face so close made him lose his irritation as he nodded eagerly.
Lin Menghan smiled sweetly. "Then how about I sing for you from now on?"
Her gentle voice lingered in his ears, almost enchanting him. "Sure! I'd love that!"
With about two minutes left before class started, their physics teacher and homeroom teacher Li Jianguo entered the classroom. Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan quickly stopped their playful banter and sat up straight, flipping open their books and pretending to study until class was over.
Li Jianguo walked up to them, bent down, and tapped on their table.
Both of them looked up in surprise, meeting Li Jianguo's kind and gentle gaze.
Lin Menghan reacted quickly, asking, "Teacher, what’s the matter?" Her voice carried a hint of nervousness. Xu Nancheng remained silent beside her.
"Nothing much," Li Jianguo replied with a light smile. "I just wanted to remind you to be more careful. It’s obvious that your actions might have consequences."
The two students realized they had been caught and had nothing to argue about, but they were genuinely puzzled; after all, they thought he hadn’t seen them at all.
They exchanged confused glances, then lowered their heads slightly, cautiously looking at Li Jianguo as if to ask, "How did you know?"
When Li Jianguo noticed their bewilderment, he simply raised his head and meaningfully glanced toward the air conditioning unit in the classroom, where a surveillance camera was positioned.
Upon seeing it, both of them gasped in shock, unsure of how to react.
Li Jianguo just smiled again before walking up to the podium.
"How could I forget about that?" Lin Menghan covered her face, feeling embarrassed. The entire process of their flirtation had been witnessed by their homeroom teacher, and Xu Nancheng looked equally mortified.
As the class bell rang, the classroom fell silent immediately.
Li Jianguo began to speak. "This time, our class has produced another outstanding student. I believe everyone knows who it is. Come on, Lin Menghan, stand up and let your classmates see you."
Hearing this, Lin Menghan, who had just been caught, hesitantly stood up and bowed to everyone. The classroom erupted in applause.
"Great! Sit down now; keep up the good work!" Li Jianguo said with hope for Lin Menghan's future, casting her an approving glance. Unfortunately, she was looking down and didn’t notice.
"Also," he continued, "as we agreed before every exam, there will be rewards. And yes, the rewards come from my own pocket. To be fair, everyone should stand up so there won’t be any disputes later."
Then the top five students stood up: Xu Nancheng, Lin Menghan, Dai Yan, Chen Yi, and Xu Dong.
