Subway Mysteries: Cycle of Life and Death

On the subway, I suddenly woke up. A sharp pain throbbed in my head.
Across from me sat a young woman, arguing with a young man. She was being yanked by him, refusing to let go, and was shouting for help. With a sudden jerk, the man tore at her upper garment, exposing her black lingerie beneath. The other passengers nearby quickly moved away.
I pressed my lips together, reminding myself—don’t get involved. I then lowered my head to scroll through my phone.
Suddenly, a news notification popped up on my screen. I didn’t catch the content clearly, but my fingers instinctively swiped it away. Just then, the announcement came over the intercom.
“Dear passengers, please prepare for arrival. The next stop is Yueyangmen Station. Passengers disembarking, please take your belongings and exit from both sides of the train door. Thank you for your cooperation…”
I jolted in realization. “ Yueyangmen? I’ve missed my stop!” I should have gotten off at the previous station, Daqingyan.
I blinked rapidly, trying to clear the fog in my mind. The last time I heard the announcement was at Daqingyan. Now I was heading straight to Yueyangmen. At least three stations had passed in between, and I hadn’t heard a single announcement for Daqingyan.
In my memory, I had never sat at Yueyangmen.
I looked around and found that the carriage was empty. It was desolate, with only me inside. Despite the air conditioning being set high, I felt a chill creeping in. I muttered to myself and tugged at my shirt before moving to the side of the carriage to lean against the railing.
Drowsiness gradually enveloped me; I squinted my eyes, caught between sleep and wakefulness. Then the announcement came on again.
“Dear passengers, we have arrived at Mingyuan Station. Please take your personal belongings and disembark from both sides of the train door. Thank you for your cooperation…”
I jolted awake. “ Mingyuan? How did we end up back at the first station again?” I clearly hadn’t heard any announcement about arriving.
I tapped my head lightly and silently stood up from my seat, preparing to get off. “I have to get off!” I tightly gripped my phone, sitting warily in the middle of the carriage to avoid contact with anyone.
Suddenly, I heard a “thud,” followed by a burst of arguing.
“What’s wrong with you? Why are you touching me?”
I turned towards the sound and saw that young woman again; she was slapping the man beside her, cursing loudly. The man wasn’t backing down either and slapped her right back.
“Who the hell touched you? Don’t slander me!”
Disinterested, I shifted my gaze back down to my phone. But their argument grew more intense, and the woman began shouting louder.
"Help! He's hitting me! This person is trying to tear my clothes!"
The other passengers quickly moved away, creating a space between the two of them.
I glanced over and noticed an umbrella rolling on the floor, neither too close nor too far from me. If I went to pick it up, I would have to pass by the two of them. I hesitated, not wanting to approach.
At that moment, the subway announcement came on again.
"Attention passengers, we have arrived at Yueyangmen Station. Please ensure you take all your personal belongings with you as you exit from both sides of the train door. Thank you for your cooperation..."
I was stunned. Had I missed my stop again? I clearly hadn’t fallen asleep! My eyes widened, and my body tensed up; I couldn't afford to let my guard down this time. I absolutely wouldn’t miss my stop again!
The arguing couple in the carriage seemed to tire out and sat on opposite sides, hurling insults at each other.
Before long, the subway came to a stop again.
"Mingyuan Station has arrived. Please exit if you are getting off..."
The train doors slowly opened, and I stood hesitantly at the entrance, unsure if I should step out.
