The path we were on was already narrow, flanked by densely planted trees. Ahead, a group of people was inexplicably blocking the road, making it impossible for the cart to proceed. The only way forward was on foot to reach the city gate.
Gu Yizhou jumped down from the cart, smiling as he reached out his hand to me. "Come on, let's walk over."
As I stepped down and looked ahead, the city built against the mountains appeared even more magnificent, with the city wall at the foot of the mountain towering at least five meters high.
However, the road outside the city gate was blocked by a long line of people, all carrying boxes.
I took Gu Yizhou's hand and joined the end of the line, muttering, "This place you live in is really peculiar; we have to wait in such a long line just to get in! Why is the City Guard checking so slowly? Does everyone have to show their ID?"
Gu Yizhou replied, "Let's go check it out up front." With that, he pulled me around the long queue beside the road, and before long, we reached the city gate.
Outside the gate, a tall man in black was confronting two young men dressed in white uniforms. Neither of them noticed Gu Yizhou and me.
From their conversation, it seemed that the two young men in white were part of the City Guard.
The Black-Clad Man spoke in a low voice to one of the White Guards. "I've been thinking for days about when I might have offended Master... Could you kindly inform him that I would like to explain myself in person?"
The White Guard reprimanded him sharply. "What kind of person do you think our Master is? You think you can just see him?"
The Black-Clad Man continued, "I brought significant gifts this time; behind me are boxes filled with ten thousand taels of gold, five South Sea Corals, and ten Night Pearls..."
The guard scoffed. "Who cares for such lowly items? I advise you to leave quickly. The Old Master and his lady returned from their travels yesterday and said they want to meet distinguished guests today. You wouldn't want to offend them; even if you had ten lives, you couldn't afford it."
The Black-Clad Man nodded repeatedly, "Good, good. I will come to visit again tomorrow."
I was utterly confused by the mention of some building, the Old Master, and apologies. What was all this about?
At that moment, the Black-Clad Man turned around and came face to face with me, our distance barely three meters apart.
When he had his back to me earlier, I felt an odd sense of familiarity, and now it finally clicked — this man was Lou Guanhai! The guards from Xing Yun Fort were all trailing behind him!
It had been seven days since we last met, but Lou Guanhai still bore a noticeable bump on his head that hadn't completely healed. My first reaction upon seeing him wasn't fear; instead, I burst out laughing.
Lou Guanhai's expression twisted into one of pure enmity, looking as contorted as a chicken's backside.
Before anyone could react, he bellowed and swung his hand toward me.
In that instant, everything seemed to play out in slow motion. I watched helplessly as Lou Guanhai's hand drew closer, his arm taut with muscle, the sound of wind rushing as his palm sliced through the air with tremendous force.
Chaos erupted around us. Some guards from Xing Yun Fort seemed ready to charge forward, while others hesitated, wary of Gu Yizhou's martial prowess. A few were desperately trying to persuade the white-clad guards not to get involved, amidst Lou Guanhai's wails reminiscent of a tale from Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio...
The buzzing noise was overwhelming.
"If you make any more noise, I'll kill him!" a voice rang out.
Gu Yizhou had grabbed Lou Guanhai by the collar with his right hand, forcing him to stand up while his left hand held a long sword firmly against Lou Guanhai's neck.
