"Water's breaking! Help!" In a large corner of the palace, flames soared into the sky, illuminating the determined faces of two women. It seemed as though the surrounding fire had no effect on them. They pulled each other’s hands and looked into each other's eyes, resolutely saying, "We'll continue to be good sisters in our next life." With a loud bang, an explosion erupted in the fiery area, causing the building to collapse. People around them frantically tried to save others but could not get close at all.
Lan Ruo Yi struggled for a moment, feeling pain all over her body. She thought to herself: Why can one still feel pain after death? In a daze, she moved her body and slowly attempted to open her eyes, realizing she was still alive. She glanced around and was shocked to find herself in a completely unfamiliar scene, with people around her exchanging glances without a care. The people nearby looked incredibly familiar; their appearances and gazes reminded her of someone she knew. She tried to look closer at one of them.
"Is that you?" Lan Ruo Yi blinked at the girl beside her, wanting to confirm if this person had been with her all along. Unbeknownst to her, Liu Ru Yan had just opened her eyes and saw another person sitting next to her. The moment their eyes met, both women recognized each other’s identities without a doubt; it was that simple—their gazes would not change so easily.
"Are we still alive?" Liu Ru Yan asked incredulously, her mind still stuck in the moment of the explosion. "It seems so," Lan Ruo Yi replied with a confirming look. Just as they were about to discuss further, a figure approached them from the front. The newcomer had a face full of flesh and a sharp gaze that cut through them like a knife. With a somewhat disdainful tone, she spat out, "What are you two doing? It's work time, not chat time! Looks like your workload isn't enough." After saying this, she intended to step forward and confront them.
Seeing this, Lan Ruo Yi thought for a moment and snapped her fingers in front of the woman’s incredulous gaze. "What’s going on? Isn’t she supposed to be dead? How could she be here?" Liu Ru Yan's eyes were fixed on the woman before them. At the moment Lan Ruo Yi snapped her fingers, everything around them froze. It was then that both women had time to clearly see the person in front of them; indeed, it was someone they recognized.
"It seems this is no coincidence." "You can't call it coincidence either," Lan Ruo Yi said as she followed Liu Ru Yan's pointing finger and noticed many familiar faces around them as they navigated through the crowd.
"Do you have your original memories?" Liu Ru Yan asked, looking intently at Lan Ruo Yi. Lan Ruo Yi seemed to understand what she meant; she closed her eyes and searched through her memories repeatedly. After a short while, she slowly nodded. Liu Ru Yan appeared to breathe a sigh of relief. "I do too! Not only that, but I've also discovered some interesting things—want to hear about it?" Liu Ru Yan's expression was playful as she winked.
"Oh? What interesting things do you have?" Lan Ruo Yi said indulgently while looking at Liu Ru Yan, who resembled a mischievous girl. Liu Ru Yan furrowed her brow seriously and looked at Lan Ruo Yi: "Shall we wait until later? Your freezing ability seems to be wearing off."
Only then did Lan Ruo Yi realize that people around them were starting to move again. At that moment, Liu Ru Yan grabbed Lan Ruo Yi's hand and ran back toward their previous seats. In the blink of an eye, they sat down obediently facing an unpleasant middle-aged woman.
"You two come with me!" The middle-aged woman glared at them with disdain while those around them showed expressions of helplessness. However, the two walked leisurely behind her, ignoring everything around them.
"Sigh, it's been so long since I've seen someone so unpleasant; I almost miss it," Liu Ru Yan suddenly sighed in her mind. Lan Ruo Yi heard this sigh and couldn't help but show a nostalgic expression.
"Back when we first arrived at Cold Palace, she wasn't very friendly towards us either; thinking back on it now, it's only been five years—how things have changed." Upon hearing this from Lan Ruo Yi, Liu Ru Yan shot her a sidelong glance: "Please! She wasn't friendly towards you; everyone loves me!"
Lan Ruo Yi's words caught in her throat as she suddenly realized something: "Don't say that! If you were so well-liked, how could you end up in Cold Palace?" Liu Ru Yan paused and then stopped walking altogether. As she watched Lan Ruo Yi's back, she stomped her foot in frustration when the woman turned around as if she had eyes on the back of her head.
"Liu Ru Yan! Are you trying to get yourself fired?"
"No! No! Sister Na! I just suddenly remembered something I haven't done yet," Liu Ru Yan quickly pleaded for mercy as if afraid of being caught for something trivial. Seeing Liu Ru Yan like this made Lan Ruo Yi's expression freeze instantly while Sister Na shot an icy glare at Lan Ruo Yi.
Lan Ruo Yi lowered her head in silence while her mind felt like it was exploding: 'Seriously? Why did you provoke her? She's acting like she's insane.'
'I really regret it; if I had known she'd act like this...' Liu Ru Yan wished these events had never happened so they wouldn't have to endure Sister Na's authoritative presence in public.
From their memories, this woman had been parachuted in as their leader just like in their previous life; those beneath her were not convinced by her authority. Thus they found themselves as targets in the crossfire of discontent.
"Sigh... how annoying! Look over there—that’s the head maid from the laundry department! She's here too? Wow! It’s all familiar faces!" Liu Ru Yan initially wanted to continue speaking but suddenly turned her gaze toward a corner where that woman was still staring at them with an amiable yet helpless expression.
"See? Don't be so jumpy; be careful or she'll catch you off guard," Lan Ruo Yi said calmly while advising Liu Ru Yan not to panic.
"I know! I know! Look over there!" Liu Ru Yan's eyes darted around as everything felt both strange and familiar—the scenery was unfamiliar while the people were recognizable.
Suddenly falling silent made Lan Ruo Yi turn towards Liu Ru Yan only to see her staring ahead with intense focus as if facing an enemy. Confused by this reaction, Lan Ruo Yi suddenly felt as though countless knives had stabbed into her body; her face stiffened as she turned to Sister Na.
"N... Sister Na! Why did you stop suddenly?" Lan Ruo Yi swallowed hard, hoping she wouldn’t hold it against them. But unfortunately for her, that plea went unheard.
