"Has that person left?" Liu Ru Yan asked, leaning against the door after pulling it shut behind her and Lan Ruo Yi as they entered the villa.
"You’re asking me?" Lan Ruo Yi looked at her in confusion. Liu Ru Yan was shocked. "Didn’t you notice someone following us?"
Lan Ruo Yi was taken aback. "Huh? Are you sure? It could have just been someone passing by; don’t overreact!" She found it hard to believe that anyone would follow them, considering they were just two ordinary girls. Seeing Lan Ruo Yi's reaction, Liu Ru Yan felt a bit helpless but also puzzled. She was certain that someone had been tailing them! Although she didn't know who it was, it was better to stay alert.
"Forget it, let’s sit down and talk. What do you want to eat?" Liu Ru Yan suggested, knowing that arguing with Lan Ruo Yi at this moment wouldn’t yield any results. It was already past eleven at night, and they hadn’t eaten yet. To be honest, Liu Ru Yan felt a bit dizzy from hunger.
"You want to eat? You actually want to eat? Can you even eat anything?" Lan Ruo Yi asked incredulously, as she wasn’t in the mood for food after the bizarre events of the day.
"If I don’t eat, I’ll starve! I won’t make it through today!!!" Liu Ru Yan exclaimed, feeling frustrated. People are made of iron, and meals are made of steel; missing one meal can be unbearable! How could she think about what happened today without some energy? She feared she might float away before she could even process it all.
"Alright then, I’ll have an eel rice bowl."
As Lan Ruo Yi saw that Liu Ru Yan had finished ordering her meal, she prepared to bring up the day’s events. But Liu Ru Yan quickly stopped her with a dramatic gesture, collapsing onto the sofa with a pale face, clearly looking unwell.
Lan Ruo Yi immediately shut her mouth; she feared that if she continued talking, she would have to rush Liu Ru Yan to the hospital.
"Ding dong~ ding dong~" The doorbell rang shortly after. Lan Ruo Yi sighed as she looked at the weak Liu Ru Yan and stood up to get the takeout. Suddenly, a figure darted past her from behind and opened the door.
Huh??? What just went out?
"Thank you! May good fortune follow you all your life!" Liu Ru Yan swiftly grabbed the takeout and thanked the delivery person. The delivery person, seeing the now-closed door, couldn’t help but shout back, "Please give us a good review!"
"Sure thing~" Sitting at the dining table, Liu Ru Yan looked at her meal as if she had stumbled upon water in a desert; she wouldn’t refuse any request from the delivery person since they had saved her life.
"What just… happened?" Lan Ruo Yi was still stunned in place; everything that had just occurred was too sudden for her to process. Even her response to the delivery person came out too quickly for her to react.
"What happened? Hurry up and eat! I’m starving! We still need to talk about what happened today!" Liu Ru Yan cheerfully dug into her food. In truth, she didn’t care much about what she had just done because it felt completely normal to her.
"Are you sure we can still talk tonight?" Lan Ruo Yi looked at Liu Ru Yan with a complex expression. She felt that they might not be able to discuss anything tonight because of how ravenously Liu Ru Yan was eating.
"Of course! Just eat first!" For Liu Ru Yan, eating always took precedence over everything else. All matters of life and death could wait until after a meal—especially since they weren’t facing death right now.
*Burp~* After finishing her meal, Liu Ru Yan seemed to come back to life with an ungraceful burp.
"I’m done too," Lan Ruo Yi said, contrasting sharply with Liu Ru Yan’s manner; she had eaten elegantly and even wiped her mouth with a napkin.
"Alright then, let’s clean up tomorrow. Let’s go upstairs and talk," Liu Ru Yan said as she headed upstairs first. Lan Ruo Yi followed behind her. Once on the second floor, they found a very spacious living room. From the state of disarray in the living room, it was clear that only Liu Ru Yan lived there; clothes were strewn across the sofa.
"Do you want to take a shower first?" Liu Ru Yan suggested.
Lan Ruo Yi nodded but felt that given everything that had happened today, discussing things tonight might not happen after all. Still, she wasn’t too anxious about it; after all, there would be time later for them to sort through their memories of the day.
After their showers, both girls felt drowsy; today had been too intense. Although they hadn’t died, the feeling of being engulfed in flames lingered on their bodies.
"Let’s just get some rest tonight; we have plenty of time tomorrow to discuss this topic," Lan Ruo Yi suggested first. It wasn’t that she was overly tired; it was just that after experiencing life and death and seeing familiar faces again, she felt somewhat drained. She sensed something was off with her memories—like something crucial was missing.
Liu Ru Yan nodded sleepily; she really was exhausted. Especially since she had only just come to terms with accepting her own death before miraculously coming back to life—the sensation of being burned still clung to her body. She vaguely remembered someone trying to save them but being blocked by a fallen beam.
A night passed quickly; dawn broke as the fiery sun slowly rose from behind the mountains, waking the girls from their dreams. Everything felt like a new beginning—they hadn’t died; they were alive, and everything they saw was real.
Sitting on her bed with her knees hugged close while gazing out at the scenery, Lan Ruo Yi thought about how from the rising sun in the distance came an inexplicable feeling: knowing dawn was approaching meant lifting one’s head would reveal nothing but sunlight.
Stepping out into the yard, perhaps it truly was winter—the air felt tangible as it flowed around her—and Lan Ruo Yi sensed the breath of life surrounding her.
"Are you awake?" Just as Lan Ruo Yi pondered whether or not to exercise a bit, she heard a voice from above her head. Looking up, she saw Liu Ru Yan facing her against the morning sun.
Seeing Lan Ruo Yi lift her head up made Liu Ru Yan smile brightly at her; her appearance radiated a bright and cute charm that seemed to bring life into the air around them—a glimmer of hope.
Seeing the lively Liu Ru Yan made Lan Ruo Yi smile back; while her own appearance exuded brightness and restraint, it also gave off a cool demeanor.
"Come inside! It’s too chilly out here!" As Liu Ru Yan watched Lan Ruo Yi seemingly wanting to gaze into eternity with her eyes locked on hers, she said this line. In an instant, Lan Ruo Yi thought how nice it could be when some people didn’t speak at all.
With two hours left before their work shift began, both girls washed up and had breakfast before settling on the sofa to continue their unfinished discussion from yesterday.
"I never expected I’d actually survive," Liu Ru Yan said innocently; she truly believed she would die. Even Lan Ruo Yi thought so too but hadn’t anticipated fate playing such a trick on them—a trick filled with hope.
