The argument escalated, and the Shen Family gradually gathered around, along with a number of neighbors.
Everyone was watching the commotion, chattering away about the scandal of infidelity; this was big news.
Seeing this, Father Shen's face instantly darkened as he scolded, "Shut up! Are you all trying to ruin your lives? Always arguing, is it never-ending?"
Before Mother Zhang Chunhua could speak, Su Mingxian had already stepped protectively in front of her children at the doorway. With half her face swollen and filled with rage, she retorted, "What do you mean 'ruin'? I think there's no point in living anymore. They say when there's a stepmother, there's also a stepfather. Don’t you wish for Shen Chi to be well? Or do you want me to be like her, cheating on Shen Chi and bringing home another man?"
Father Shen was immediately furious upon hearing this. "You wretched girl!"
His thunderous shout sent shivers down everyone’s spine. Mother Zhang Chunhua was taken aback, her eyes wide open as she stood up abruptly, pointing at Su Mingxian and shouting, "You shameless wretch! What nonsense are you spouting? When have I ever wished for you to go out and cheat? You’re slandering me!"
Unfazed, Su Mingxian glared back and shouted, "You know whether I'm slandering or not! Aren't you just taking advantage of Shen Chi not being home to bully us? What's wrong with having a piece of meat? Outsiders can eat it; why is it stealing when my daughter Qian Qian eats it? Why can't the Shen Family's own granddaughter eat?"
Su Mingxian was filled with resentment; just because of a piece of meat, her daughter’s life had been ruined.
So now she deliberately targeted Zhang Chunhua's sore spot.
Shen Chi’s biological mother was a young intellectual who had died early. In contrast, Zhang Chunhua had remarried into the Shen Family with two children from her previous marriage. This was something she dreaded being reminded of.
"You ungrateful little harlot! I’ve fed and supported your mother all these years, and this is how you repay me?" Su Mingxian had struck a nerve, causing Zhang Chunhua to jump up in anger. "You little brat! All you think about is eating! What would happen if I kicked you? You dare talk back to me? Just wait until I slap you—"
With that, she rolled up her sleeves as if ready to fight. Su Mingxian felt no fear at all; she stood firm with the children behind her and stepped forward defiantly. "Go ahead and kill me if you want! But today, even if I die, I must get this straight: who is really supporting whom in this family? My husband has been in the army for three or four years now, and he’s been in Shanghai for two or three years. Which month hasn’t he sent money home?"
Su Mingxian spoke without hesitation, "From small amounts to hundreds, how much has it been over the years? Everything you eat, drink, wear, and use—where do you think that money comes from? Look at Liu Juan, and then look at me. She wears and uses the latest things, while I’m stuck with what you all discard, even patched-up clothes. I work tirelessly every day, getting up before the roosters and going to bed later than the dogs, working harder than an ox. Why should I endure this?"
Liu Juan, caught in the crossfire, could only respond with silence.
"This outfit was bought for me by my family—"
But Su Mingxian scoffed disdainfully, "That outfit of yours must have cost at least a hundred or so. Your family is so poor they can barely make ends meet; where would they get the money to spend on you?"
Upon hearing this, her mother-in-law, Zhang Chunhua, was displeased. "I bought it for her; is that not enough?"
"Sure, why not?" Su Mingxian continued through gritted teeth. "Using the hard-earned money from the Shen family's stepson to support your children with another man while beating his daughter-in-law and mistreating his child. How can there be such a wicked stepmother like you in this world? Aren't you afraid of retribution?"
