Sometimes, when Rao Jie returned home, she couldn't help but try new things, and at times it was Wu Rong who reminded her to take a break. It felt as if she had suddenly broken free from some kind of shackles; with her newly sprouted wings, Rao Jie soared upward, praying to see more of the world.
On this particular day, after finishing her thesis at school, Rao Jie followed Wu Rong's instructions to find him in their office area, as they were supposed to go out for dinner together. Having complained to Wu Rong about their lack of a typical romantic relationship, he had forced himself to establish a routine of going out on dates once a week.
As soon as she arrived at the office building, she ran into Ye Ming.
Upon seeing her, Ye Ming rushed over with a beaming smile and exclaimed, "Ah, my great benefactor!"
Rao Jie looked puzzled. "What?"
Ye Ming grinned and said, "Rao Jie, I really need to treat you to a meal; you've done me a huge favor."
Rao Jie was completely bewildered. What had she done?
Ye Ming smirked and explained, "When Wu Rong went to England, I was so worried he might get taken away by someone else. But thanks to you, he came back! I'm truly grateful; otherwise, I would have lost a trump card."
Rao Jie eyed him suspiciously, as if he had done something bad to Wu Rong.
Ye Ming continued with a laugh, "Of course, I'm not trying to hinder Wu Rong's wonderful development; he's my good buddy after all. But I do hope he stays for a while longer—at least until he finishes that project. It's really important for me! Wu Rong is someone who doesn't care about personal connections; he just does things based on his own preferences. If he really wants to leave, I can't stop him—he's crucial for my career!"
Ye Ming's exaggeration left Rao Jie merely watching his performance without saying much.
She had heard from Wu Xin that Ye Ming often felt 'wronged' at school because he was the principal's son and always wanted to prove his capabilities. His goal was naturally to surpass his father and become the best principal in the future. However, being young meant many obstacles stood in his way. Thus, Wu Rong's presence became his ace in the hole, facilitating some policy changes in the Mathematics Department and making things run more smoothly.
Naturally, he didn't want Wu Rong to leave.
But it wasn't that he disregarded his friends for personal gain; it was just that Wu Rong needed a place at that moment when Ye Ming needed his help most—they were simply a perfect match.
However, this time he feared that Wu Rong might suddenly be taken away from him; then he would become an angel whose wings had been clipped.
"Well, it's not just me; it's because Wu Rong feels responsible for not completing the project..."
"That's not true! He could take it to Cambridge and continue his research! It's just that you haven't decided where you're going yet. He probably wants to wait until you finish your graduate studies before taking you along. Wu Rong treasures you!"
Rao Jie paused slightly, her expression touched by his words.
Ye Ming didn’t notice her reaction and eagerly said, "By the way, we have a gathering with our high school classmates tonight. Come along! There are several rivals of mine from high school who know that Wu Rong is working here now. If he doesn’t come with me, I’ll lose face! Can you join us?"
"High school reunion for Wu Rong?"
Wu Rong hadn't mentioned it to her before, and she had said she was going on a date today. It seemed like she knew about it but just didn't want to go.
Rao Jie respected Wu Rong's decision and turned to Ye Ming, saying, "I'll follow Wu Rong's lead. If Wu Rong says she's going, then I'll go."
