The celebration was held in our company's first-floor Crystal Hall.
The boss, the founder of the company, reportedly started his business with his father-in-law's assets.
His business associates had specially crafted a life-sized statue of him.
This statue stood proudly in the center of the hall, surrounded by clusters of vibrant red roses. A red cloth covered the statue. The unveiling ceremony for Boss Zhao Yi was one of the highlights of this celebration.
It was already five minutes past nine. Normally punctual for meetings, the boss had yet to arrive.
His wife, Zhang Lin, was already there.
Rumor had it that they had long been separated; it seemed the boss couldn't keep his wife in check, and she had strayed.
Thus, it wasn't suspicious that they arrived separately.
What happened next was somewhat dramatic, and I’m sure you can guess what it was.
After exchanging pleasantries with familiar faces, Mrs. Zhang Lin frequently glanced toward the entrance, but her husband was nowhere to be seen. A flicker of displeasure crossed her face as she struggled to suppress her anger. She took out her phone and called several times, but no one answered on the other end.
In desperation, she could only feign calmness and announce that they would not wait any longer and would proceed with other activities, saving the unveiling ceremony for last.
At that moment, a spirited orchestra composed of ten-year-old boys took the stage and began to play an exhilarating drumbeat.
According to the original plan, the band was supposed to march around the venue. The lead boy of the band stood out particularly; he was tall and wore a pointed red hat, strutting confidently with his chest out.
He skillfully and expertly led the group in a circle, but just as they returned to their original position, an unexpected incident occurred.
The tip of the boy's hat accidentally snagged a corner of the red cloth covering a statue, and with his movement, the cloth was suddenly yanked away.
All eyes instantly focused on the scene, and instead of a statue beneath the cloth, there lay a real man, flesh and blood.
His head hung low, as if his neck had been broken.
The face of the corpse was devoid of color, pale as marble.
However, everyone present recognized him at once—he was none other than my boss, Zhao Yi, whom I often thought of as wicked.
In an instant, screams erupted like a collective chorus from his wife and three female assistants.
I too was startled by the horrifying sight before me, but I did not react with the exaggerated surprise that everyone else expected. Instead, my attention was drawn to the assistants' wide-open mouths.
I could clearly see their pink throats and the small tongues trembling with high-pitched screams.
In this tense atmosphere, the scene felt somewhat absurd, and I nearly burst into laughter.
The sudden turn of events reignited my desire to drink.
Instinctively, I reached into my bag, hoping to pull out the Wine Bottle. It clearly wasn’t appropriate to sneak away and drink in a moment like this, but even just touching the Wine Bottle seemed to offer me some comfort.
My bag was large and filled with various items: a makeup case, lipstick, perfume, a notepad, pens, keys, and documents I might need at any moment.
As I rummaged through it, my fingers brushed against a small, round object that felt like a keychain.
But I didn’t remember having such a keychain.
Curious, I pulled it out and discovered it was a ring made of Platinum.
This ring was wider than usual and had delicate engravings etched into its surface.
As I gazed at the patterns, a sense of familiarity washed over me.
Suddenly, I remembered—it was our boss's ring.
Normally, no matter what he was doing, he never took off this ring. Even when his marriage was on the brink of collapse, he insisted on wearing it, believing it would leave a sincere impression on clients.
A shiver ran down my spine as I instinctively glanced towards the body of our boss, surrounded by flowers.
