We escaped into an abandoned chemistry laboratory.
The air was thick with a pungent chemical smell, and under the dim light, the tables were cluttered with test tubes, beakers, and scattered reagent bottles, remnants of some mad scientist's work.
My legs were still shaky, and my shoes had exhausted their last bit of "combat power" from the earlier throw.
"Brother Haotian..." Zhao Mengmeng called softly, her voice tinged with tears.
I gritted my teeth and forced myself to calm down. "Don't be afraid; we're safe for now."
Si Tu Xiangnan adjusted his glasses, his expression serious. "The word 'for now' is crucial; those zombies won't give us much time."
Jiang Jie stood by the lab table, her gaze calm and focused.
She had already started organizing the equipment, appearing more composed than anyone else, but the tight line of her lips betrayed her inner unease.
"Jiang Haotian, take out your socks," Jiang Jie said without looking up.
"Uh... you mean the remaining pair?" I hesitated for a moment, reluctantly pulling out the pair of socks that was almost beyond recognition from my pocket.
Jiang Jie took the socks, frowned at them briefly, then quickly put on gloves and used tweezers to place them into a sealed glass container.
"This thing could practically qualify as a biochemical weapon," Si Tu Xiangnan said, covering his nose and stepping back with a tone full of disdain.
"Less talk!" Jiang Jie shot him a cold glare. "If it weren't for this 'biochemical weapon,' you'd have been zombie dinner by now."
Her words silenced Si Tu Xiangnan, though his expression still radiated contempt.
I couldn't help but roll my eyes. "Fine, you two keep bickering. I'm going to find something that can be used as a weapon."
With that, I turned and began rummaging through the lab, trying to distract myself from the monsters that could burst in at any moment.
Meanwhile, Jiang Jie had already started extracting the components of Socks.
She cut a small piece from Socks, soaked it in a solvent, and then analyzed it using various instruments.
The liquid in the test tube was heated, cooled, and filtered; each step seemed incredibly complex and precise.
Zhao Mengmeng leaned in curiously and whispered, "Sister, can this really work?"
Jiang Jie paused slightly, not answering directly. Instead, she murmured, "We can only try."
Her voice sounded calm, but her hand holding the tweezers trembled slightly.
I noticed but said nothing, merely letting out a silent sigh—what in this world could ever guarantee success?
Just then, a faint explosion shattered the brief silence in the lab!
"Oh no!" Jiang Jie exclaimed as the beaker in her hand suddenly shattered, releasing a pungent cloud of smoke that quickly filled the room!
Zhao Mengmeng screamed in fright, and I rushed over to shield her behind me while covering my mouth and nose with my sleeve. "What happened?"
Jiang Jie coughed and waved her hand. "There was a problem with the reagent reaction..."
"Is there a problem with the reaction? Are you doing research or blowing up the kitchen?" Si Tu Xiangnan frowned and asked, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Shut up!" Jiang Jie shot him a fierce glare. "In this situation, no one can guarantee that every step will be flawless!"
Seeing the tension between the two, I couldn't help but interject, "Alright, alright, let's all just calm down! This isn't the time to argue!"
Just as we were bickering, a low and eerie howl echoed from outside the door!
My heart sank—those creatures were closing in!
"Quick! Block the door!" I shouted, rushing over to push a metal lab table against it. But that flimsy barrier was clearly not enough to withstand the force of the zombie horde.
Si Tu Xiangnan and Zhao Mengmeng quickly joined in to move other items, while Jiang Jie hurriedly gathered the experimental materials from the table, stuffing an unfinished vial of extract into her pocket.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The door shook violently as it was battered. I could even see grayish-white nails and decaying flesh pushing through the gaps!
"They're coming in!" Zhao Mengmeng screamed, her face as pale as a sheet.
"Brother Haotian, do you have any tricks left?" She clutched my sleeve tightly, her voice trembling.
I gritted my teeth, clutching the last pair of Stinky Socks in my hand—our final line of defense and the only thing that could deal with these monsters!
Just as the zombies were about to break through the door, I hurled the Socks with all my might towards the entrance!
Indeed, those creatures recoiled at the foul smell, with a few even falling to the ground. However, many of the zombies merely paused for a moment before continuing their advance toward us!
"This won't do! The effect is weakening!" A wave of despair washed over me. Was there truly no way out this time?
Just as we were on the brink of disaster, Jiang Jie suddenly pulled out an unfinished small bottle from his pocket and hurled its contents into the horde of zombies!
A pale yellow liquid sprayed into the air, causing the zombies to emit agonizing howls. A few even turned and fled!
Yet, more zombies only hesitated for a brief moment before lunging at us again!
"The effect isn't strong enough!" Jiang Jie gritted his teeth. "But at least we've bought some time!"
Seizing the opportunity while the zombies momentarily retreated, we quickly made our way into a safer small room and locked the door behind us.
As I caught my breath, I glanced at the remnants of the smoking bottle and couldn't help but ask, "What was that just now?"
Jiang Jie adjusted his glasses, his expression complex as he looked at me. "It’s some unknown component extracted from your socks... Although its effect is limited, it clearly has some impact on the zombies."
Hearing this sparked an inexplicable glimmer of hope within me—perhaps we had indeed found a new path forward?
However, before that hope could fully take root, a deeper, more terrifying roar echoed from afar...
This time, it sounded closer and far more dangerous!
