Scar Monkey steadied his nerves and asked, his voice trembling, "W-what are you?"
He didn’t ask "who are you?" because he couldn’t be sure if this figure that had suddenly appeared in the dense forest was human or something else entirely.
The person obviously couldn’t answer; his entire head was tightly wrapped in tape. He had struggled to turn his body just enough to extend his foot out of the thicket for help, if that was indeed his intention.
Scar Monkey hesitated to act recklessly. He cautiously approached and began to tear away the yellow tape that covered the man's head and face.
The person bound in tape seemed quite skilled at packing; the tape was applied so tightly that it was airtight. If Scar Monkey had arrived even a moment later, this man might have suffocated.
However, when he tore away the last few strips of tape and revealed the man’s face, Scar Monkey’s expression turned to one of sheer terror, as if he had truly seen a ghost.
Indeed, he had “seen a ghost.”
The person tied up in the forest was none other than his teammate, Wuchang Ghost, who had just been walking ahead moments ago. He was completely naked, without a single piece of clothing on him, neither black nor white.
"W-why are you here? What on earth is going on?" Scar Monkey stammered.
Wuchang Ghost remained silent, staring at him with dark, brooding eyes, a low growl emanating from his throat.
That sound didn’t resemble anything a human would make! It was like the roar of a beast trapped in a cage!
Scar Monkey had only managed to untie half of the ropes when he suddenly stopped. He truly didn’t know if freeing Wuchang Ghost was a wise decision.
Scar Monkey trembled as he pulled out the Handheld Radio, his fingers shaking so much that he could barely press the buttons.
After a struggle, he managed to turn on the Handheld Radio and called out to Feng Wuhen with a voice that quivered noticeably, “Scar Monkey calling for Wuhen!”
On the other end, Feng Wuhen’s familiar yet urgent voice responded quickly, “Wuhen here. Monkey, I’ve been calling you for ages! Where are you?”
Scar Monkey tried hard to calm himself, but his voice still trembled uncontrollably. “You guys need to come back quickly. I have a bit of a tricky situation here. Wuchang Ghost… he…”
However, Feng Wuhen’s next response hit Scar Monkey like a bolt from the blue, exploding above him.
Feng Wuhen said, “We’ve already caught up with Wuchang Ghost! The five of us are gathered now; we just need you to hurry up and join us!”
They had already caught up with Wuchang Ghost? Then who was this person in front of him… what was going on?
Scar Monkey’s mind went blank in an instant, a chill racing up his spine from his feet.
He suddenly turned around, only to find nothing behind him. The previously bound and naked Wuchang Ghost and the rope had vanished without a trace. The branches of the tree that had once held a person swayed gently in the breeze, as if recounting that what had just happened was not an illusion.
It dawned on Scar Monkey that the pile of yellow tape in his hands silently testified that his recent experience was stark reality.
He must have loosened his bonds and taken advantage of the moment when Scar Monkey turned to contact his teammates to sneak away.
From the Handheld Radio came the voices of Feng Wuhen and several teammates. Scar Monkey even heard Wuchang Ghost clearing his throat on the other end, his voice low and clear, as if nothing had ever happened.
Scar Monkey suddenly realized that the scene he had just witnessed could never be revealed as it was.
For within it lay an extremely significant secret, closely tied to the interests of a certain traveler.
And once it was known that he had caught a glimpse of this secret, the next person bound with tape and left to die in the depths of the primeval forest could very well be him!
