Su Mingxian was busy making money, while Shen Chi had just arrived home after several days of train travel.
He hurried back, only to find that his house was empty; everyone in the village had gone to the East End to see the commotion.
"Hey, isn't that Chi Zi? Why are you back?" Before Shen Chi could respond, the person continued, "Hurry up and go take a look! There's going to be a death! Your stepmother is fighting with Aunt Cuihua."
Shen Chi was a bit bewildered. How could two people from such different parts of the village—one from the East End and one from the West—end up in a fight?
"Sun Cuihua, if you don't hand over that little brat with the surname Su today, I won't let this go," Zhang Chunhua said, gripping Aunt Cuihua's hair with a vicious expression. "Tell me, who did she run off with? You’re such a loose woman, flirting with men everywhere, and now you’re bringing trouble to our Shen Family. Are you going to talk or not?"
Aunt Cuihua was not one to be easily bullied either. She retaliated by grabbing Zhang Chunhua's hair and spat defiantly, "Zhang Chunhua, you venomous woman! With such a wicked mind, aren't you afraid of retribution? Xiao Su was driven away by you and your family, and now you want to smear her name? You old hag deserve nothing good!"
Zhang Chunhua was furious and cursed back, "You shameless wretch! I'll make you pay for your stubbornness!"
"Enough! Stop it!" With a loud shout, both women turned to see Shen Chi Yi's stern face.
Zhang Chunhua froze in shock and quickly released her grip, unsure of where to put her hands. "Uh, Chi Zi, why are you back?"
Shen Chi looked at her coldly. "The person is missing. How could I not come back? What on earth is going on? Why are you attacking Aunt Cuihua?"
Zhang Chunhua shifted uncomfortably but didn't hold back her words. "What else could it be? You’ve been away for so long that little brat couldn’t hold herself together and has been out flirting with men. Just a few days ago, she swindled your father out of over eight hundred dollars and ran off with some wild man—"
Before she could finish, Aunt Cuihua interrupted loudly, "Shut your mouth, you old hag! Do you still want Bi Lian? When has Xiao Su ever flirted with men? It’s clearly you and your son who have ill intentions towards her. Who sneaks into their sister-in-law's house in the middle of the night? Why hasn’t a bolt of lightning struck you down? Xiao Su was driven away by your kind!"
Zhang Chunhua jumped up three feet high, exclaiming, "Sun Cuihua, you worthless piece of trash! Stop spitting venom; it’s clearly her own fault—"
Before she could finish, Shen Chi shouted, "Enough!"
"Cuihua Aunt, you speak."
With the opportunity presented, Sun Cuihua seized it to vent her frustrations. She recounted in detail the hardships Su Mingxian had endured over the years and all the oppression she had faced. Not only that, but she also recounted everything that had happened in recent days without missing a single detail.
In the end, she sighed, "What a good child she is, grateful and kind. She gave me all those things she didn’t need anymore and even handed me five dollars when she left. I couldn’t refuse it. But such a wonderful child has been driven to this by that venomous woman, Zhang Chunhua. Chi Zi, you must stand up for your daughter-in-law! Without a man to support her, she has struggled too much raising her child all these years. It’s been incredibly hard for her."
At this point, tears began to flow down her cheeks. "Cuihua Aunt never tells lies. If you don’t believe me, just ask anyone in our village. If I speak one false word, may lightning strike me down!"
