I had become the most notorious Dark Witch in the magical world.
In the tales sung by bards, I was the embodiment of chaos and disaster, a being that instilled fear even in the gods. My name, Alice, was a nightmare that haunted the cries of infants in the night, the source of Paladins' midnight terrors.
According to the original script, I was supposed to perform a cataclysmic display of dark magic at the peak of my power, right before those fools shouting slogans of justice, turning the entire world upside down.
Then, a handsome Paladin would emerge, wielding a holy sword, sealing me away single-handedly and bringing a brief peace to this world.
Afterward, my soul would dissipate, and tranquility would return once more.
But now...
The system had bugged out again!
Not only had it messed up my entrance timing, but it had also dealt me a super-sized dose of bad luck.
When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself lying on a cold stone slab, utterly powerless and devoid of magic—like a lemon squeezed dry of its juice, utterly worthless.
The system's electronic voice buzzed in my mind with its usual mechanical awkwardness—
"Host, apologies. The work AI encountered a minor error during its first cross-dimensional transport."
"According to the original setting, you were supposed to arrive at the height of Dark Witch Alice's powers, but now... it seems you've been dropped into a timeline a millennium later."
I struggled to roll my eyes and attempted to sit up, only to find my body felt as soft as a pile of mush; I couldn't muster any strength at all.
"Just a little bit? You call this just a little bit?" I roared inwardly, wishing I could drag that unreliable AI out and give it a good beating.
The system seemed to sense my anger and began to explain cautiously.
"According to the system's detection, a thousand years ago, the powerful Paladin Alan sealed the Dark Witch Alice at the cost of his life. You, as the vessel for her soul, were sealed away as well. Now, with the weakening of the seal's power, you have awakened 'a Millennium Later.'"
"However, host, your current magical power level is zero, and your body is extremely weak. To complete your tasks, you must quickly regain your strength and gather Magic Gems to stir up the winds of this world."
"Stir up the winds? Me?" I looked at my frail arms and legs and nearly burst into laughter. "I can't even move a blade of grass right now; how am I supposed to stir up anything?"
The system ignored my complaints and continued issuing tasks.
"Task One: Within one month, gather enough Magic Gems to restore your magic."
"Task Two: Within three months, instill fear in the hearts of people once again regarding the Dark Witch Alice."
"Task Three: Within six months, establish a dark dominion over this world."
I rolled my eyes in disbelief.
"Are you kidding me? In my current state, I can't even defeat an ordinary person, and you want me to conquer the world? How about you give me a full revival package first?"
After a brief silence, the system replied in a cautious tone, "Um... Host, due to this oversight, the system has decided to grant you double points as compensation. Additionally, upon completing your tasks, you will have the opportunity to receive a reward for 'interdimensional travel,' allowing you to return to your original world."
“Oh? Interdimensional travel?” I raised an eyebrow, feeling a slight sense of comfort.
But soon, I realized a more pressing issue—how was I supposed to survive in this unfamiliar magical world?
As I pondered the philosophy of life, footsteps approached from a distance.
A man clad in tattered armor and with disheveled hair walked over. He looked exhausted, with several scratches on his face, exuding an indescribable air of desolation.
Upon seeing me, he paused for a moment, then his expression shifted to one of caution.
He stepped closer, holding a rusted sword that pointed directly at my throat.
“Who are you? Why are you here?” His voice was deep and hoarse, as if he hadn’t had water in a long time.
I lifted my head and scrutinized the man before me. Despite his disheveled appearance, his blue eyes remained clear and bright, with a hint of determination in his brow.
He… looked somewhat familiar.
“I… I am… Alice,” I weakly uttered my name, silently praying that this guy wasn’t part of some evil force.
Upon hearing my name, the grip on his sword trembled noticeably. His eyes widened in disbelief.
“Alice? You’re not… you’re not supposed to be unsealed!” His voice quivered slightly.
"Um... maybe the seal has loosened," I said, trying to sound calm despite my unease.
The man was silent for a moment, seemingly deep in thought. He sheathed his sword but remained on guard.
"Why are you here? And... your current appearance..." He hesitated, as if he wanted to say that I looked like a beggar.
I shrugged, putting on a pitiful expression. "I don't know, I just woke up here, and... I feel so weak and hungry..."
The man frowned, seemingly displeased with my demeanor. He glanced around and then sighed. "Forget it, just come with me."
He extended his hand and helped me up from the ground. It was then that I noticed how unexpectedly tall he was.
He led me into a shabby little hut. Inside, there was only a simple bed and a rickety table, with several holes in the roof allowing faint rays of light to filter through.
"Where... is this?" I asked, looking around.
"This is my hut," the man replied in a flat tone.
"Who are you?" I asked again.
He paused for a moment before slowly saying, "Eren, a... fallen Paladin."
