Jiang Li felt a bit reluctant in her heart; after all, she didn't want to be his patient anymore. However, if she said that, it would seem like she was dismissing his kindness. With no other choice, she opened her phone and added him as a friend.
As she walked out of the hospital, Jiang Li still felt a bit dazed, thinking that she might just have a heart attack from how much she liked him. What could she do? She liked him so much, and that feeling hadn’t faded even after five years.
When she was almost home, her phone received a message from Gu Nanfeng, reminding her of the dosage for her medication. Jiang Li stared at the line of text on the screen as if it were a love letter written in Morse code. After a long moment, she put her phone away with a bitter smile and shook her head. Five years ago, she had mustered the courage to write him a love letter, but he had given no response, clearly rejecting her silently. What was she even thinking now? Adding him on WeChat wouldn’t change anything.
Her toothache was severe, and her heart felt just as bad. If taking medicine was the solution, she pulled out the plastic bag and without water, swallowed the bitter white pills whole.
Gu Nanfeng was not only handsome but also exceptionally skilled in medicine. After two days of medication, her tooth no longer hurt. He seemed to know this too; on the third evening, he sent her a message asking her to come to the hospital for a dental filling the next day.
Jiang Li typed out many words on her phone but deleted them one by one, unable to find a suitable excuse not to go. Gu Nanfeng watched as his phone displayed “Typing…” for a long time and couldn’t help but chuckle before quickly typing four words: “See you tomorrow.” Well… forget it; once her tooth was fixed, they wouldn’t see each other again. Jiang Li replied with a simple “Okay.”
The next day, before dawn broke, Jiang Li hurried to the hospital. She arrived so early not because she was eager to see Gu Nanfeng but because she wanted to avoid the awkwardness of being publicly “given special treatment” by him.
In the hospital waiting area, there was only one nurse busy at work. When the nurse saw Jiang Li arrive so early, she flashed a professional smile and asked, “Would you like to take the last morning appointment?” Jiang Li quickly waved her hand in refusal. The nurse couldn’t help but chuckle lightly and teased, “You’re quite different from others. Many beautiful girls wake up early just hoping to get that last appointment to see Dr. Gu for a little longer.” Jiang Li’s lips twitched slightly as she thought to herself that she would never do such a thing.
The nurse seemed like she wanted to say more but started with, “You really don’t need to; Dr. Gu…” Before she could finish, Gu Nanfeng walked into the waiting area. The nurse immediately turned around and activated the electronic screen in the consultation room.
Jiang Li looked up and saw Gu Nanfeng wearing a black trench coat, standing tall and handsome. As he took off his coat and walked briskly toward the consultation room, he passed by Jiang Li and briefly said, “You can come in too.”
Jiang Li silently followed him into the consultation room and watched as he changed into a clean white coat before gesturing for her to lie down in the treatment chair. Doubts crept into her mind—why had they started so quickly? Wasn’t it still too early for work? Suddenly feeling a pang in her heart, she speculated that perhaps he didn’t want her staring at him for too long; he wanted to finish treating her teeth quickly so that she could go home and not be an eyesore for him here. It had been like this last time too; back then, she foolishly thought he was giving her special care!
