Jiang Li sat alone in the waiting room, quietly watching Gu Nanfeng work through a glass door. His focused and charming demeanor radiated professionalism and seriousness with every movement. One by one, the patients entered and exited the room until finally, everyone had finished their appointments and left. Gu Nanfeng stood up and walked towards Jiang Li. She quickly averted her gaze, pretending to watch the LCD TV on the wall.
At that moment, the nurse had gone for lunch, leaving the dental clinic empty and quiet enough to hear each other's breathing. Gu Nanfeng approached Jiang Li, his tone now gentle again. "What do you want to eat?" It was then that Jiang Li realized his anger had dissipated, and he actually intended to have lunch with her. Before she could respond, Gu Nanfeng had already taken her arm and led her outside.
The sun blazed fiercely outside, heating the ground to a scorching temperature. Yet, Jiang Li felt as if her heart was like a skewer of meat placed on a grill by Gu Nanfeng—hot and agonizing. He took her to the hospital's Staff Canteen, which surprised Jiang Li. After all, in her mind, the news about Gu Nanfeng being "set in stone" with the director's daughter had spread widely. Now he was bringing her here for a meal; from the director's perspective, Gu Nanfeng's actions seemed somewhat "arrogant."
Strangely enough, Jiang Li found herself loving this unique kind of "arrogance" about him. While she was lost in thought, Gu Nanfeng had already ordered for her. They had grown up together; he knew exactly what she liked and disliked. Because she was afraid of aggravating her painful tooth again, Jiang Li ate slowly. Gu Nanfeng ate quickly but in small portions, patiently waiting for her to finish before he spoke softly, "The year you moved away, I lent you a copy of ' The Code of the Classic of Mountains and Seas'..."
Jiang Li's heart leapt into her throat as she instantly understood what he was about to say. Back then, she had tucked a love letter inside that very book when she gave it to him. She pressed her lips together, striving to remain calm while her heart raced uncontrollably.
Gu Nanfeng wanted to continue but was interrupted by an urgent shout: "Chaoyang! Hurry! Emergency!" Jiang Li looked up to see Liu Menglin calling him. She desperately wanted to stop Gu Nanfeng but swallowed her words. She knew he was an excellent doctor; at such a moment, she couldn't let her feelings complicate things for him.
Gu Nanfeng hurriedly threw out an "I'm sorry" before running towards the emergency room. Liu Menglin glanced at Jiang Li from afar; just that one look felt like a bucket of cold water extinguishing the flicker of hope that had just ignited in her heart.
Jiang Li watched Gu Nanfeng's figure gradually disappear at the end of the corridor and sat there despondently for a while. She understood that what special words could Gu Nanfeng possibly have for her? Rather than face another cruel rejection, it would be better to bury these feelings deep within her heart forever; at least this way, she could cling to that tiny shred of insignificant hope and force herself to smile through life.
Jiang Li stood up and slowly walked outside. Strangely enough, despite the heat outside remaining intense, she felt no warmth at all; she felt numb as if something inside her had hollowed out, leaving her uncertain about where to go in the future.
