It turned out that this girl was Jiang Li, the only one he had ever mentioned throughout his university years. Liu Menglin looked at the dazed Gu Nanfeng and softly said, "You've finally run into her. Aren't you going to chase after her? She shouldn't be far away. Gu Nanfeng, you like her, right? At least tell her."
Upon hearing this, Gu Nanfeng seemed to awaken suddenly, coming back to life in an instant. Without a second thought, he dashed toward the stairs.
Liu Menglin watched his retreating figure, the light in her eyes gradually dimming. She knew that some feelings, once missed, could never return, and perhaps she had always been an outsider from the very beginning.
At this moment, there were very few vehicles on the road, and taxis were particularly hard to hail. Jiang Li had been waiting by the roadside for a long time, her anxiety growing. When she casually glanced up, she saw Gu Nanfeng rushing down the stairs from afar, looking frantic. He hadn’t even had time to take off his white coat; its hem fluttered wildly in the wind like a white bird eager to take flight.
Jiang Li felt puzzled. Did something urgent come up again? But upon a closer look, it seemed his gaze was fixed intently on her. Panic surged within her as she thought: He came all this way just to reject me face-to-face? That would be too cruel!
Just then, a taxi she had called slowly approached. Like a startled rabbit, she quickly hopped into the car and urgently told the driver, "Sir, go! Go!"
Gu Nanfeng sprinted to the side of the car, but Jiang Li's taxi had already sped away.
As Jiang Li finally exhaled in relief, her phone suddenly rang in her pocket. Startled, she saw that it was Gu Nanfeng calling, and a wave of disgust washed over her. She thought to herself: This Gu Nanfeng is really too much! Does he have to reject me at this moment? Is he trying to show off in front of his current girlfriend? I won't answer!
However, Gu Nanfeng seemed determined and kept calling again and again. Jiang Li had forgotten to charge her phone last night; after several rounds of "battling," the battery was running low and displayed a warning of imminent shutdown. In those last thirty seconds, her gaze inadvertently fell on the screen where four words jumped out: "I like you."
Jiang Li froze instantly, filled with confusion: What? Gu Nanfeng likes me? Did I read that wrong? She couldn’t believe her eyes and frantically pressed the power button, but the battery was too low; as soon as it turned on, it cruelly shut down again.
"Driver! Driver! Can you please take me back to the hospital?" Jiang Li said anxiously. The driver hesitated and replied, "I can take you back, but it's a one-way street; we’ll have to make a long detour to turn around. Plus, we'll hit two red lights along the way. By the time we get back, the person you're looking for will probably be gone."
Jiang Li couldn’t care less about all that; as soon as the car stopped, she jumped out and ran frantically toward the dental clinic. When she breathlessly reached the door of the consultation room, she found it locked—Gu Nanfeng hadn’t started work yet.
Hot and anxious, nearly exhausted from running, she squatted down on the ground gasping for air. Sweat dripped continuously from her forehead, blurring her vision. "Is your tooth hurting again? Why are you squatting there crying?"
