For a moment, both of them fell silent, staring at each other. Lu Tianyang could see from the woman's eyes that she truly did not want to marry him.
How could it be that he, Lu Tianyang, wealthy and handsome, with such good conditions, was still being rejected by her? Was there any justice in this?
With a sigh, Lu Tianyang looked at her helplessly. "Ye Ya, do you really want our child to grow up in an incomplete family? How can you be so selfish?"
Indeed, she admitted that she was somewhat selfish. She couldn't provide the child with a normal family, but she also had the responsibility to ensure that the child grew up in a relaxed and free environment.
"Lu Tianyang, I am that selfish. I'm doing just fine with the child. Why do you have to provoke me?" Ye Ya was somewhat angry. Their lives were clearly separate, yet he forced her into this situation without ever respecting her wishes.
"Ye Ya, who is provoking whom here? Why don’t you talk about how you ended up in my room and slept with me? Now you plan to walk away without any responsibility?" Lu Tianyang thought to himself that he was so infuriated by her that he might as well just give up.
Hearing his words, Ye Ya looked at him with disdain. "I did give you money back then; it was mutual consent." She had seen shameless people before, but this was the first time she encountered someone so brazen—appearing gentlemanly on the surface but truly a rogue underneath. How could he still be the president of Lu Group?
"I don't care. You have to take responsibility for me, Ye Ya. Let me tell you, you can't take my child and be with another man. I absolutely will not allow my child to call someone else 'dad.'" Lu Tianyang was genuinely furious; otherwise, how could such shameless words come out of his mouth?
"I won't marry you. Is that clear enough? Lu Tianyang, what exactly do you want from me? I’m telling you, once the baby turns one month old, I’m going home." Ye Ya was equally exasperated. Encountering such an unreasonable man was infuriating. Generally speaking, when faced with such situations, men would want to take responsibility. But every time she thought of the Ye Family, the Jing Family, and the Lu Family, fear gripped her.
Thinking about Mrs. Lu's attitude today made her realize that she would certainly not have a good future ahead. So why should she bring the child into this chaos? The thought of even the Lu Family suspecting that her child was illegitimate was something she could not accept.
"Fine, I won't argue with you anymore. Don't get angry; just rest early," Lu Tianyang said. He couldn’t believe that he could defeat such tough opponents in business but couldn’t handle a small woman like Ye Ya.
At the Lu Family home, Du Huiru returned looking furious, her face pale with anger. Seeing her like this, Old Man Lu put down his newspaper. "What did Lu Tianyang say? Why are you so upset after going there?"
"Dad, you have no idea! That woman is incredibly scheming—she retreats to advance and has Lu Tianyang wrapped around her finger! She keeps saying he must marry her; it's driving me insane! If that woman enters our family, how will our relatives view us? She’s someone who was rejected by the Jing Family and is publicly known as an illegitimate daughter by the Ye Family!" The more Du Huiru spoke, the angrier she became.
Lu Jianming had already heard Du Huiru's words from the stairs and frowned. "Honey, did you ask that woman how much money it would take for her to leave?"
"The moment I brought it up, I got even angrier! She actually said she doesn’t want money and isn’t interested in joining our Lu Family! She even told me to persuade Lu Tianyang to let her go quickly! Can you believe this? This woman is truly cunning! And Lu Tianyang insists on marrying her—what are we supposed to do now?" With only one son to marry off and having to consider such a daughter-in-law made Du Huiru feel like she couldn’t swallow this anger.
"Even a completely innocent girl would be better than her; at least marrying someone like that wouldn’t lead to gossip. If he really marries her, I’m afraid I won’t be able to hold my head high anymore." Old Man Lu had always been proud and valued his reputation highly; how could such a woman become his granddaughter-in-law?
"This matter has to start from Lu Tianyang himself; let me talk to him about it. You two should stop getting worked up," Lu Jianming said. He had encountered all sorts of situations in life but never someone like this woman—she simply wanted more money.
“Darling, hurry up and take care of that. I don't think Ye Ya is someone to be underestimated.”
That evening, Lu Tianyang was summoned back home by Lu Jianming. He wanted to return to clarify his stance; he didn’t want a repeat of today’s events. Ye Ya hadn’t done anything wrong; in fact, she had always been innocent. He remembered how she had endured so much criticism alone and still insisted on giving birth to their child. He couldn’t let her bear all of this alone again.
Upon returning to the Lu Family, the atmosphere was somewhat oppressive, reminiscent of a family tribunal.
“Grandpa, Dad, Mom, I’m back.”
“So you do know how to come back. I thought that woman had enchanted you so much that you forgot where home was,” Du Huiru scolded, nearly twisting his ear in reprimand. “Now you dare to say you must be responsible for her and her daughter? Grandpa, haven’t you taught me since I was little that one must take responsibility?”
Lu Tianyang truly didn’t know what to say. Did he really have to abandon Ye Ya for the sake of appearances?
He knew that Ye Ya was as resilient as a weed; even alone, she could live well. But he couldn’t bear the thought of her struggling through life like this, especially since she was the mother of his child.
“But have you considered what kind of girl you’re marrying? If she were just an ordinary girl from a common family, I could accept it. But no, you insist on marrying a scandal-ridden illegitimate daughter who has even been jilted. How do you expect Grandpa to respond?” Lu Old Man could no longer hold back his disapproval. No matter how good that girl was, she simply wasn’t worthy of the Lu Family.
“Son, I think your father’s suggestion is the best. We’ll raise the child ourselves, and later you can marry a girl from a respectable family and say the child is yours. That would solve everything,” Du Huiru felt this was already a considerable concession; initially, she couldn’t even tolerate the idea of having the child.
“I won’t agree to that! I want both Ye Ya and the child! Now I understand why she refused to marry me; how can you all be so selfish?” Lu Tianyang suddenly stood up from the sofa.
“Selfish? Have you considered our feelings? If you marry her, how can our Lu Family hold our heads high in public from now on? Lu Tianyang, let me tell you, if you insist on marrying her, don’t expect to inherit the company,” Lu Jianming was also furious; the two of them were like two enraged lions.
“I am going to marry her!” After saying this, Lu Tianyang didn’t want to stay there any longer. Perhaps he was selfish; he hadn’t married according to their wishes. But did that mean he should marry some delicate glass-like so-called lady?
However, why he insisted on marrying Ye Ya, he didn’t bother to think about at that moment. To him, it felt only natural to marry her now that they had a child together.
When he returned to Yiju Mountain Villa, it was already past eleven o'clock. Ye Ya had just finished putting the baby to sleep and was surprised to see Lu Tianyang enter with a weary expression; she thought he wouldn’t come back.
Lu Tianyang walked over and looked at the baby in the crib. He reached out to touch her little face but remembered he hadn’t washed his hands yet and decided against it.
“Chen Chen, Daddy’s back.” Just as Lu Tianyang finished speaking, his stomach growled unexpectedly, reminding him that he hadn’t eaten anything all night.
Hearing this, Ye Ya looked at him as if he were an alien. “Lu Tianyang, you haven’t eaten?”
He nodded honestly. “Yeah, Xiao Ya, I’m hungry.”
Ye Ya felt she must be crazy to say, “Then I’ll have the kitchen make you something to eat.” After saying that, she regretted it. Why did she care about this man? Wouldn't it be better if he starved?
“Xiao Ya, thank you,” Lu Tianyang said sincerely, making Ye Ya feel embarrassed to stay in the same room with him any longer.
Ye Ya went downstairs. The servants were all resting. After thinking for a moment, she decided it wouldn't be too difficult to make a late-night snack. She walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. The ingredients were quite abundant. Ever since moving in here, she had been living a life of luxury. Now that she was in confinement, she felt that the extra weight on her body would be hard to lose.
She chopped some tomatoes to make soup and casually tossed in a few greens before frying an egg. While frying, Ye Ya couldn't help but scold herself for being foolish, as if these days of enjoying good food and living well with her daughter were somehow repaying him.
Ten minutes later, Ye Ya brought a bowl of noodles upstairs and said somewhat irritably, “The servants are all resting, so I just made you a bowl of noodles. If it doesn’t suit your taste, feel free to throw it away.”
Lu Tianyang walked over to the table and looked at the noodles. In fact, this was his first time eating such noodles made by this woman’s own hands. She really was sharp-tongued but soft-hearted.
“Ye Ya, thank you. I’ll finish all of this,” Lu Tianyang said as he picked up his chopsticks and took a bite of the fried egg, the yolk oozing out. He couldn't help but smile at her.
“Crazy man, hurry up and eat. Don’t disturb me while I sleep,” Ye Ya thought to herself as she observed him smiling like a charming devil. Was he trying to use his good looks on her?
But even that charm wouldn’t work on her; she had always been immune to handsome men. To her, they were like beautiful poisonous mushrooms growing in the forest—pretty on the outside but toxic on the inside. She wasn’t that foolish.
