Ye Tao stood frozen, watching the situation unfold as Zhao Meiqin and Ye Qi pulled at Ye Ya, ready to fight. He hurried over, wanting to separate them. "Stop it right now!"
But both women were too enraged to listen; they couldn't swallow their anger and weren't about to let go of the opportunity to retaliate.
Ye Ya quickly regained her composure. Grabbing Ye Qi's wrist with one hand, she squeezed tightly, causing Ye Qi to wince in pain and release her grip. Only Zhao Meiqin remained, and with a forceful throw, Ye Ya sent her sprawling to the side. She wiped the corner of her mouth and surveyed the once clean and tidy living room, now resembling a battlefield.
"Anyone who dares to lay a hand on someone else will get thrown out immediately," Ye Zhen fumed, his anger palpable. What should have been a pleasant birthday celebration had turned into chaos.
Though reluctant, Ye Qi and Zhao Meiqin dared not defy the old man’s words and stood off to the side, glaring fiercely at Ye Ya.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack so you can pay your respects at my grave next Qingming Festival?" Ye Zhen's voice was strong despite his age, causing both Ye Qi and Zhao Meiqin to lower their heads in shame.
"Grandpa, I didn’t mean to! But she actually tried to steal Lu Tianyang from me! Someone like her is just embarrassing us!" Ye Qi protested.
Ye Ya couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. She didn't know what had transpired between Ye Qi and Lu Tianyang, but the fact that Ye Qi was so furious indicated that Lu Tianyang had no interest in her. "When has Lu Tianyang ever belonged to you? If you had the ability, you would have kept him for yourself instead of blaming me for your own shortcomings."
Earlier, when Ye Zhen had seen Ye Qi with Lu Tianyang, he had entertained thoughts of their potential connection. If Ye Qi could establish ties with the Lu Family, it would certainly be beneficial.
"You’re just like your mother—shamelessly trying to seduce another woman's man."
"Ye Qi, clean up your mouth! I won’t allow you to insult my mother again!" Ye Ya shot back angrily, lightly wiping away the blood from her lips. The pain from where Ye Zhen’s cane had struck her back still lingered, but what hurt more was the emotional turmoil within her—a river of sorrow flowing unseen.
"Enough of this bickering! Ye Ya, you and Lu Tianyang are not suited for each other. Don’t get entangled with him anymore."
At Ye Zhen's words, Ye Ya raised an eyebrow. She looked at the gift she had painstakingly chosen now discarded on the floor. In this house, no one had even glanced at it. She felt like one of those neglected writing tools tossed aside—so out of place in this environment.
"I'm sorry. From now on, how I choose to act is my own business. Today was my mistake; I shouldn't have come here and disturbed you all." Ye Ya no longer wanted to stay there. No matter what mindset she had come with, it had twisted into something unrecognizable. Ultimately, she realized how naive she had been; this place would always feel like a battlefield to her. She was truly exhausted.
This was never her home.
"Xiao Ya," Ye Tao had not expected that tonight's reunion would turn out like this.
"Mr. Ye, I’m very sorry for the trouble I’ve caused you. Please don’t disturb me again in the future. The Ye Family is something I cannot aspire to," said Ye Ya, striding out of the Ye Family residence, leaving behind Zhao Meiqin's scolding. None of that mattered anymore.
The night breeze blew gently, and her back throbbed with pain. She hadn’t anticipated that Ye Zhen would strike her from behind, and she could still feel the sting on her face. Perhaps it was for the best; that blow from the cane shattered all her illusions about familial love, awakening her to the reality that she could no longer afford to dream.
She couldn’t help but smile bitterly. They had ruined a perfectly good birthday party for her; Ye Ya, you really are like a jinx. Remember this: don’t be so foolish in the future. In the Ye Family, you will always be a disgrace, no matter how well you perform.
After walking for over ten minutes, Ye Ya realized she didn’t even have money for a taxi; her bag was left at the Ye Family home. She glanced at the street signs and estimated it would take at least an hour to walk back.
She could only hope that Gui Sao would find her bag and keep it safe; otherwise, losing her identification and other documents would be a hassle.
At that moment, she couldn’t think about anything else; she just wanted to get home quickly. Chen Chen was at home too—she wondered how he was doing without her there. Would he go to sleep obediently?
Feeling anxious, Ye Ya quickened her pace. As night fell, the number of pedestrians and vehicles dwindled. She navigated through the streets of the city in her high heels.
Lu Tianyang returned to Jiangjing Bay and noticed that Ye Ya still hadn’t come back. Had she gone to the Ye Family? But why hadn’t he seen her? It was almost midnight, and she hadn’t returned his calls—her phone showed it was off.
Damn it, where could she have gone? As Lu Tianyang watched the time grow later, he felt uneasy and decided to go out searching for her.
Just as he opened the door, he saw Ye Ya returning in a disheveled state, with blood at the corner of her mouth that hadn’t been wiped clean. Half of her face was slightly swollen, with clear handprints visible, indicating she had been hit.
This woman was no pushover; how could she have been beaten?
Ye Ya didn’t understand why Lu Tianyang was still there when she saw him. She felt emotionally drained; it didn’t matter anymore.
Lu Tianyang looked into Ye Ya's eyes, which held no trace of emotion, a strangeness that frightened him. He couldn't help but grip her shoulders tightly. "Xiao Ya, tell me, what happened?"
Ye Ya shrugged off his hands and turned to walk inside. "Lu Tianyang, you should go home. I need to rest."
He felt a sense of helplessness; he didn't even want to ask her anymore. What was love anyway? It was just a nuisance to her.
As she turned to leave, Lu Tianyang grabbed her hand. "Ye Ya, what’s wrong? Who bullied you? Was it someone from the Ye Family? I'll make them pay."
He was anxious, furious at whoever had hurt his woman like this.
Ye Ya turned back, brushing aside the messy strands of hair from her forehead. "It's fine, thank you. Just go, I really want to rest."
Her demeanor was chillingly calm and disturbingly unfamiliar. He would have preferred if she had shouted at him or hit him rather than coldly thanking him.
Lu Tianyang tightened his grip on her shoulders and shook her gently. "Just tell me who did this to you!"
His grip was a bit too strong, landing on the spot where Ye Zhen had struck her, causing her brow to furrow in pain.
"I'm fine; it’s just me being overly dramatic. Lu Tianyang, please go. Don’t disturb Chen Chen's rest; it's late." She spoke almost pleadingly, truly just wanting him to give her some space. Was that too much to ask?
Noticing something was off with Ye Ya, Lu Tianyang pulled at her shirt, revealing a dark bruise on her back. Softening his tone, he pulled her into an embrace. "Xiao Ya, don’t be afraid. Just tell me what happened."
Ye Ya leaned against him, unable to hear anything or feel any warmth. All she wanted was to hold Chen Chen but feared that her current state would frighten the child.
"I want to take a shower," Ye Ya finally said.
"Okay." Lu Tianyang reluctantly let her go so she could wash up. He desperately wanted to help this woman, but he knew she would never allow it.
Ye Ya opened the wardrobe and took out a set of pajamas. She glanced at Lu Tianyang, who was still standing at the door, and decided not to say another word to him as she walked into the bathroom.
In the bathroom, the glass mirror clearly reflected her appearance. The bloodstains at the corners of her mouth were still there, and the imprint of a hand on her face had yet to fade. She gently looked at her hands, realizing that today she had actually dared to strike the lofty little princess of the Ye Family. This was the first time in all her years with the Ye Family that she had mustered the courage to act.
Ye Ya, today you finally stood up for yourself.
Yes, she had stood up for herself, but in doing so, she had severed ties with the Ye Family.
She took off her clothes and turned slightly; her back still ached painfully. The deep crimson mark on her skin mirrored her heart, which felt as if it were bleeding.
She had obstructed the interests of the Ye Family. If Ye Qi married Lu Tianyang, it would be a matter of great benefit with no drawbacks for the Ye Family. No wonder Ye Zhen was so furious.
She always seemed to ruin his good fortune.
After finishing her shower, Ye Ya emerged from the bathroom. Chen Chen had been taken by Guo Ma to sleep. Seeing that her child was peacefully asleep, Ye Ya couldn't bear to wake her. Moreover, in her current state, she didn't want her daughter to see her like this.
She didn't want Chen Chen to witness those ugly things, even though she was still just a baby.
Lu Tianyang pulled Ye Ya into the room. She had no idea what he intended to do and looked at him in confusion without saying a word.
Perhaps at this moment, her mind was truly blank; aside from thoughts of Chen Chen, there was no room for anything else. She wanted to rest and regain her strength.
Lu Tianyang sat beside her and cupped her face in his hands, gently stroking it. He noticed her brow slightly furrowed. "Does it hurt? Tell me who did this."
Did it matter? Did it have any significance? Ye Ya didn't want to speak.
"Xiao Ya, please don't be like this. If you want to hit me or curse me out, that's fine too. But who did this?" Lu Tianyang couldn't let go of this question; he would never easily forgive those who harmed her.
“I want to sleep, can you please go out?” Her calm demeanor made Lu Tianyang very uneasy. He sensed that if he left at this moment, he might lose this woman forever.
“I’m not going anywhere, Ye Ya. Just tell me what’s wrong, and I promise I’ll get revenge for you,” Lu Tianyang said through gritted teeth, his anger growing. “Did the Ye Family bully you? I’ll make them pay for it.” The more he spoke, the more furious he became. He didn’t care about anything else; whoever wanted to say whatever could do so—he was determined to marry her.
“Ye Ya, listen to me. Tomorrow we’re going to get our marriage certificate. Let’s see who dares to bully you after that.”
Ye Ya couldn’t help but smile slightly. “Lu Tianyang, don’t be silly. Why are you still so childish?”
“I don’t care about anything else. Let the newspapers write whatever they want, and let others say whatever they want. I’m going to marry you, and then I can protect you openly.” Only by being open could he ensure that no one would dare to mistreat her again.
Tonight’s situation arose because of him. Thinking about how he had been with Ye Qi made her instinctively pull his hand away. “Don’t be foolish. If you’re going to marry someone, it should be Ye Qi; at least her status matches yours better. Just go; I’m really tired tonight.”
Now Lu Tianyang understood what was happening. Ye Ya must have returned to the Ye Family and seen something that led to a misunderstanding.
“Xiao Ya, let me explain. I don’t want anyone else; I only want you. I was worried you’d get hurt at the Ye Family tonight, so I came looking for you. But when I got to the venue, I couldn’t find you, which is why I ended up with Ye Qi. I swear nothing happened between us; you have to believe me.” Lu Tianyang desperately explained. Damn it! How did she end up seeing that? He hadn’t done anything wrong; it was all his carelessness that allowed that woman, Ye Qi, to take advantage of the situation.
