Both of them let out a hum in unison. Qi Fan quietly carried Tao Momo up to the second floor and settled her into the guest room. "You dead woman, just behave and don’t disturb everyone’s sleep."
"Get out! I don’t want to see you," Tao Momo shot him a glare, truly believing he thought she cared about being here.
"Fine, I’ll leave. I don’t want to look at you for another second anyway. Just hurry up and rest," Qi Fan said as he carried her back, drenched in sweat, eager to return to his room for a shower.
Lying on the bed, Tao Momo felt uncomfortable all over, her body sticky with sweat. She glanced around the room and cautiously moved over to the wardrobe, pulling out a clean set of pajamas.
She wondered if that jerk Qi Fan brought women back all the time since he had several sets of pajamas ready, all brand new, with tags still attached.
Holding the pajamas, she looked at her foot. Aside from being swollen and painful, it was mostly fine; she just hoped it wouldn’t affect her attendance at Ye Ya’s wedding—then it wouldn’t matter.
After finally managing to take off her clothes, Tao Momo sighed in relief. It was just a foot injury; why did it feel like she was completely incapacitated?
She turned on the shower and used a bath sponge to wash herself. A faint medicinal smell lingered on her skin. Frowning, she intended to make it quick, but often things went awry when one rushed.
The foam on the floor was too slippery. While putting on her clothes, she lost her balance and fell dramatically. In a moment of panic, she grabbed onto the nearby towel rack, but it couldn’t bear her weight and ultimately sent her tumbling down.
Qi Fan had just opened his computer to check today’s emails when he vaguely heard Tao Momo’s voice. His expression darkened as he couldn’t help but walk over.
The room was empty except for the sounds coming from the bathroom—Tao Momo’s cries. Without thinking much, Qi Fan rushed over and flung open the bathroom door. Both of them froze in shock.
"Qi Fan, you perverted maniac! Get out!" she exclaimed as she tried to get up from the floor.
Qi Fan steadied himself and grabbed a towel to wrap around her. Ignoring her protests, he scooped her up and carried her out of the bathroom.
Tao Momo clutched the towel tightly, feeling more embarrassed than she ever had in her life.
Seeing Tao Momo sulking with her head down made Qi Fan feel uneasy. He sat beside her and said, "I didn’t mean to barge in; I thought something happened to you. Put your clothes on or you’ll catch a cold."
"I don’t need your help," Tao Momo swatted his hand away and turned her head to avoid looking at him; she felt utterly humiliated.
"Don’t be so stubborn; just put on some clothes first," Qi Fan said with frustration as he noticed her hair still dripping wet. He offered her a robe.
"Just get out! I don’t need you meddling," she thought about how mortifying this was and how she would face people again—especially this jerk who would surely mock her every day for this incident.
"Don't be angry anymore. Just put on your clothes. If you catch a cold, what will you do?" Qi Fan urged, his tone filled with concern. He was never one for persuasion, and besides, his daughter didn't need much convincing—just a check would solve everything.
"Qi Fan, go ahead and laugh. Go on, laugh! I've lost all my face; are you happy now?" Tao Momo replied, her spirit as wilted as a flower deprived of water. She had completely lost her anger and even found herself missing the days when they would bicker endlessly.
Sometimes, people could really be infuriating, Qi Fan thought to himself.
"I won't laugh. Just listen to me and put on your clothes. You know it's not good to catch a cold. Aren't you always talking about being Ye Ya's bridesmaid? If your foot gets hurt again and you catch a cold, how will you participate?" Seeing her on the verge of tears softened Qi Fan's heart, and he couldn't help but coax her gently.
This sudden display of vulnerability from the fierce woman was truly disconcerting; it felt like his heart was about to shatter.
"Isn't this perfect? It doesn't bother you, right? Aren't you always saying how much you dislike me?" The more she spoke, the more aggrieved she felt. It seemed like everything was conspiring against her. "I never thought you were bothersome; you're just talking nonsense," Qi Fan immediately retorted. Although there were times he felt she didn't act very feminine, he had never disliked her.
"You do think so! You're always calling me a shrew!" She thought to herself that she wasn't bad-looking at all, yet here he was labeling her as such. It made her question whether she really was that terrible.
Qi Fan took a deep breath; wasn't it ironic that she blamed him for something he never intended? Women were truly strange creatures. But seeing her about to cry made him hesitate to say anything further. It was utterly baffling.
As they continued talking, Tao Momo buried her head in her knees and began to cry uncontrollably. At that moment, Qi Fan realized she had every right to be upset; he really was a jerk for making her cry.
"Please stop crying! It's my fault; I'm the one who's wrong! I'm not human—it's all my fault! Just don't cry anymore, okay?" Qi Fan had never comforted a crying woman before and found himself at a loss for what to do.
To his surprise, Tao Momo cried even louder. He placed his hands awkwardly before him, unsure where to put them until he finally pulled her close. "Please stop crying! If you want to hit me, go ahead! Or take a stick and hit my foot instead; let out your frustration that way—how does that sound?"
Qi Fan held her shoulders tightly and suddenly kissed her.
Tao Momo pushed him away in shock.
"How shameless! How indecent!"
Qi Fan quickly withdrew his arms. "Okay, just put on your clothes by yourself in a bit. I’ll step outside for now."
As the door clicked shut behind him, Tao Momo looked at herself in disbelief and muttered under her breath, "Qi Fan, you big jerk."
The next day, Ye Ya called Tao Momo out of concern. When Tao Momo saw Ye Ya's name on her phone screen, she responded weakly. She had no idea how to explain that she had spent the night at Qi Fan's place and even kissed him—it felt unbelievable even to herself.
After hanging up the phone, Ye Ya raised an eyebrow. "Lu Tianyang, I just heard something odd in Mo Mo's voice. What if Qi Fan is bullying her? I swear if he makes Mo Mo unhappy, I won't care if he's your brother or not."
"Although Qi Fan is a bit of a flirt, he is definitely reliable when it comes to getting things done. He just hasn't met the woman who can keep him in check. I think he and Mo Mo make a pretty good match," Lu Tianyang said while adjusting his tie, responding to Ye Ya. He hadn't been to the company for a while, but Zuo Kai had been reporting the situation to him in secret. Still, there were some matters that needed his personal attention.
"Dear, don't worry about these things. Just take some time to rest at home for the next couple of days. Our wedding is coming up soon, and I will try my best to come home early in the afternoon to spend time with you," Lu Tianyang added, unable to resist giving Ye Ya a kiss. With the wedding date approaching, Ye Ya had chosen not to stay at the Lu Family residence but instead returned to Yiju Mountain Villa. It would only be on the day of their wedding that she would officially move into the Lu Family.
In truth, if she had a choice, she wouldn't want to live in the Lu Family house at all. That grand mansion felt like a cage, with Du Huiru constantly looking for ways to criticize her, as if she were eager to find any fault.
But what could she do? After all, Du Huiru was Lu Tianyang's mother. She believed that over time, the Lu Family would truly accept her. For the sake of Lu Tianyang and Chen Chen, she was determined to make an effort.
As the wedding date drew nearer, Ye Ya's anxiety grew stronger. Happiness seemed so close yet so far away. Tao Momo said she was experiencing pre-wedding jitters and that everything would be fine once the ceremony was over.
The Lu Family had conducted comprehensive public relations efforts regarding Ye Ya and Lu Tianyang's wedding. No newspaper dared to bring up past events anymore; after all, Ye Ya was also considered part of the Ye Family. The union of two prominent families had become headline news.
Ye Ya took out a necklace that had once been a token of love from her father to her mother. Now it was in her hands. "Mom, can you see my happiness from up there? I miss you so much."
When Lu Tianyang returned and saw Ye Ya lost in thought while looking at the necklace, he walked over and embraced her. "Xiao Ya, are you thinking about your mom? She knows we're getting married and will be very happy for us. I promise I will take care of you."
Ye Ya wrapped her arms around his waist without saying anything, simply enjoying the moment in his embrace. It felt so good.
