Qiao Nuo had no idea why Jin Chengyan had been staying at Jin Mansion these past few days. The contract only stated that he would return for two days each week. However, Qiao Nuo was too preoccupied to care much about it; after all, she was busy with work when she got home, making sales calls one after another until her voice became hoarse.
On Saturday, Qiao Nuo was working in the living room. After finishing a call that led nowhere, she stood up from the sofa, stretched lazily, and noticed her water cup was empty. Her throat felt sore again, so she took the cup and headed toward the kitchen.
She glanced outside and saw that Jin Chengyan's car was gone; he must have left before she woke up, which allowed her to work freely in the living room.
Just as she stepped out of the living room, the doorbell rang. Looking at the electronic display, Qiao Nuo saw a woman's face—a very beautiful woman. Even though the woman wore sunglasses that obscured half her face, Qiao Nuo found her strikingly familiar.
Recognizing someone was one thing, but in the next moment, it dawned on Qiao Nuo that this woman was ringing the doorbell of Jin Mansion, clearly looking for Jin Chengyan. And her identity? She was Jin Chengyan's wife—someone he could not mention.
Panic set in immediately. Qiao Nuo felt as if the woman on the screen could see her and wanted nothing more than to hide away.
But then she quickly realized that the person outside couldn’t see her at all; as long as she didn’t open the door, she would be fine. With that thought, Qiao Nuo calmed down and patted her chest as she continued toward the kitchen.
A few minutes later, Qiao Nuo returned from the kitchen with a glass of water. Her mind was still occupied with thoughts about how to soften her tone for future sales calls and not let rude remarks from clients get to her.
As she walked down the hallway leading to the living room, she sensed something was off in the atmosphere.
She paused and glanced toward the stairs—Jin Chengyan was actually home! Dressed in casual clothes, he looked particularly gentle, but his handsome face showed no expression at all. His gaze was fixed on the entrance hall opposite the stairs.
Everything seemed to move in slow motion as Qiao Nuo slowly turned her head and saw the woman from the electronic display. The woman removed her sunglasses, and only then did Qiao Nuo remember who she was.
The rising star on the big screen, Ruan Shengyu, stood there, her presence striking. But why was she here? From the way Jin Chengyan descended the stairs, it was clear he hadn’t opened the door himself. Ruan Shengyu must know the password to the Jin Mansion.
This relationship made Qiao Nuo inexplicably suspicious. Could Ruan Shengyu be Jin Chengyan's sister? That would explain her knowledge of the password. But one had the surname Jin and the other Xi; could they be cousins? Or perhaps...
Qiao Nuo couldn't help but let her thoughts wander. Was it possible that Ruan Shengyu was something more than just a friend to Jin Chengyan?
Moreover, there had been news about them on television before...
But that didn’t make sense either. A beauty like Ruan Shengyu seemed too valuable to waste on a mere fling; she should be cherished and taken care of by someone like Jin Chengyan. Why would he choose to marry someone else instead of her?
In just a few seconds, Qiao Nuo felt as if her mind was in turmoil. She turned her gaze back to Jin Chengyan, silently asking him what they should do.
Unfortunately, Jin Chengyan didn’t look at her. He remained standing on the half-meter-high step, gazing down at Ruan Shengyu with an air of authority.
Ruan Shengyu’s exquisite face was not heavily made up; she wore only a simple touch of makeup and dressed in very casual clothes. If it weren’t for her standout beauty, Qiao Nuo would have thought she was just a girl from the neighborhood.
She slightly shifted her gaze away from Qiao Nuo and casually remarked, “Has your family hired a new maid?” Lowering her head, she took off her high heels and opened the shoe cabinet, only to find no slippers that belonged to her.
Saying nothing, she closed the cabinet and slipped back into her high heels.
“I’ll just say a few words and leave; I won’t change into slippers. I hope that’s alright?” She smiled lightly, showing no signs of discomfort. “It should be quite convenient for cleaning up, right?”
Ruan Shengyu had a sweet dimple on her right cheek when she smiled.
However, when the topic shifted to Qiao Nuo, she didn't know how to respond. Should she just agree and say that she would clean up properly, as she was a diligent servant?
"She is not a servant." Jin Chengyan stepped down the stairs in a few strides and stood in front of Ruan Shengyu, adopting a posture that felt unfamiliar to her.
