After the family went bankrupt, Qiao Nuo transformed from a girl who wore her emotions on her sleeve into someone who could read the room. Although Ruan Shengyu still maintained a smile on her face, Qiao Nuo could see the surprise hidden in her eyes.
For reasons unknown, Qiao Nuo quickly said, “Mr. Jin, I’ve taken care of the flowers in the garden. I’m sorry for coming in to get a glass of water; I’ll leave now.” She hurriedly placed the cup on the table at the bottom of the stairs and ran out without even changing her slippers.
Jin Chengyan raised an eyebrow, watching the door that had been opened and then swiftly closed again, and he couldn’t help but smile wryly.
“She…” Ruan Shengyu swallowed the words that were on the tip of her tongue. She had no intention of going inside; perhaps she didn’t want to confirm her suspicions.
When she looked up and saw Jin Chengyan’s expression, it felt as if her heart had been sharply pierced. He shouldn’t be able to show such a smile to any other girl.
“Is there something you need?” Jin Chengyan asked casually, his tone distant and polite, instantly shifting to the demeanor he used with others.
Ruan Shengyu pulled herself together and smiled brightly. “I’ve accepted a role in a new drama and will be starting soon. I just wanted to let you know.”
“There’s no need for you to come all this way for such trivial matters.” He showed no intention of inviting Ruan Shengyu inside, leaving them in a standoff between the entrance and the stairs.
Ruan Shengyu’s face lost some of its luster at Jin Chengyan’s words, but that didn’t change the fact that she was about to start filming. “Take care of yourself,” she said, placing her hand on his.
Jin Chengyan subtly withdrew his hand. “You should go. If reporters catch you here, it won’t be good for either of us.”
Repeated rejections could shatter even the most proactive heart. Her smile had long faded as she suppressed all her words and turned to leave.
As the door closed behind her, Ruan Shengyu heard a muffled sound from inside, like something had been broken.
Qiao Nuo wandered along the road near Jin Mansion, and after walking for a while, she realized she was wearing slippers. It suddenly dawned on her that when Ruan Shengyu opened the shoe cabinet, he must have seen the few pairs of shoes she often wore inside. What kind of gardener would leave their shoes at their employer's house?
How foolish could she be!
"But I did this to avoid giving Ruan Shengyu the wrong idea about my relationship with Jin Chengyan," she reassured herself. From the atmosphere between them earlier, it seemed like they were two people involved in a secret romance. After all, one was President Jin and the other was an actress on the rise; if they were together, everyone would surely know.
"I wonder if Ruan Shengyu has left..." Qiao Nuo had not worn a coat when she came out; she only had on a T-shirt and long pants. She hadn't felt cold at home, but as soon as she stepped outside into the cool breeze, she felt like she would freeze in the next moment.
"Should I go back now?" Qiao Nuo muttered to herself. "That doesn't seem right. Since they've both decided to keep it a secret, it's a rare opportunity for them to meet. I would just be interrupting them. Sigh, they really are a perfect couple..."
She began to jog to keep warm but unexpectedly ran into someone she didn't want to see. She remembered that their family shouldn't be around here!
