According to the customs of Qin Cheng, the deceased must be kept at home for three days before being cremated.
Qiao Nuo knew that Qiao Chen was under a lot of pressure with his studies. As a senior in high school, he had always struggled academically, and now he needed to work even harder to get into college on his own merits.
Therefore, she decided to send their father for cremation the next day. Staying by his side would only add to their sorrow without offering any solace.
With no relatives around, it was just Qiao Nuo and Qiao Chen. They barely had enough hands to carry the coffin, and if it weren't for Huo Yawen's help in calling another doctor from the hospital, they would have struggled to manage. Together, the four of them managed to carry the coffin out of the funeral home.
As they watched their father being taken in for cremation, Qiao Chen covered his sister's eyes with his hand, holding her close.
Yet, Qiao Chen remained wide-eyed and unblinking.
Later, the staff handed them a urn containing the ashes, and they proceeded to bury it at the cemetery.
By the time everything was finished, it was already afternoon. Qiao Nuo felt utterly exhausted. She initially wanted Qiao Chen to come home and rest for the night before returning to school the next day, but he insisted that he couldn't afford to fall behind in his studies.
Huo Yawen drove Qiao Chen to school first.
As he got out of the car, Qiao Chen leaned over from the back seat and said to Huo Yawen, “Huo Yawen, don’t be fooled by how my sister seems strong and capable right now; deep down, she’s still a soft-hearted girl. Please take good care of her!”
Both Huo Yawen and Qiao Nuo turned their heads at Qiao Chen's words.
It was Qiao Nuo who first patted Qiao Chen on the head. Huo Yawen might not have known the full story, but she did; this kid had said yesterday at the wake that Huo Yawen and his sister were a perfect match!
Today, he was acting familiar, addressing her as "Huo Yawen" instead of "Miss Huo."
"Don't listen to him, kids these days really have no sense of propriety. Just don't take it to heart!" Qiao Nuo quickly explained to Huo Yawen.
Huo Yawen, sitting in the driver's seat, smiled slightly. He looked at Qiao Chen seriously and said, "I understand. I will treat her like a girl." He still wasn't used to the term "soft girl."
Qiao Chen and Huo Yawen exchanged a glance, a silent communication between men. Just as Qiao Nuo was about to reprimand Qiao Chen, he swiftly got out of the car.
Once Qiao Chen left, Qiao Nuo felt a bit awkward.
Huo Yawen said nothing more, turned on the car's music, and then drove away from the school.
Standing at the school gate and watching the car grow distant, Qiao Chen did not enter the campus but turned and walked in another direction.

Huo Yawen dropped Qiao Nuo off at the apartment building and opened the car door for her.
"I won't go up. You should rest well. If you feel tired, take a few days off from work. I don’t have any surgeries scheduled for the next couple of days, and my phone will be on 24/7. If you have any issues, just call me. Even if you're tired, make sure to cook something for yourself; don’t order takeout."
Huo Yawen felt he had too many reminders to give Qiao Nuo; a few words were simply not enough. He wished he could go up with her.
But he knew that Qiao Nuo needed some time alone right now.
Qiao Nuo nodded and gave Huo Yawen a reassuring look before turning to head upstairs.
The hallway was quiet, with only the sound of her footsteps echoing.
She never felt that losing the title of a wealthy young lady was anything to lament, nor did she find living in such a small place particularly stifling.
However, her father's departure left her feeling as if she had been completely hollowed out. She sensed that her future was like the dimly lit corridor ahead, devoid of any glimmer of light.
"Snap—"
At the sound of footsteps, the motion-sensor light in the corridor flickered on.
Qiao Nuo, there is still sunshine in your life!
There will surely be someone who illuminates the path of your existence.

Downstairs, a white SUV parked from evening until deep into the night, finally starting up and leaving in the early hours of the next day.
