"Does Ruan Shengyu have any work scheduled for today?" Jin Chengyan asked, sitting in the back seat with a blank expression as he called Xu Lin.
"She just finished a shoot and has nothing planned for the afternoon."
"Okay, I'll go see her." To avoid running into Yan Beiting like last time when he went to find Ruan Shengyu, he decided to call ahead this time.
He could only explain his behavior as self-torture.
After hanging up, Jin Chengyan pondered for a moment before saying to A Shan, "A Shan, go to the police station and clear Qiao Nuo's case. Don't leave a record."
A Shan nodded without surprise. Although he sensed that his young master was in a bit of a bad mood today, the fact that he was willing to clear Qiao Nuo's case indicated that there were no issues between them anymore.
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped outside Ruan Shengyu's building. Jin Chengyan got out discreetly and entered.
As soon as he walked in, he was hit by the smell of traditional Chinese medicine. Jin Chengyan frowned; he hadn't heard that Ruan Shengyu was unwell...
"Ruan Shengyu, are you sick?" Jin Chengyan asked, noticing that Ruan Shengyu had just set down her bowl. Her face looked slightly troubled from drinking the bitter medicine.
"It's nothing serious, just a bit weak. Xu Jie said drinking Chinese medicine would be better."
"Oh..." So that's it. Jin Chengyan felt relieved.
He walked over and sat beside Ruan Shengyu, unwrapping a piece of candy from the table and handing it to her.
"Ruan Shengyu, I've asked A Shan to clear that case. It's all taken care of now."
Ruan Shengyu took the candy from Jin Chengyan and popped it into her mouth but didn't quite understand what he meant by that.
"What case did you clear?" she asked, then slowly began to realize. "Oh, how did you resolve it?"
Yan Beiting had previously told her not to hold a grudge against Qiao Nuo, and now Jin Chengyan claimed he had already instructed A Shan to drop the case. It was truly amusing how these two men were willing to hurt her for Qiao Nuo.
Jin Chengyan fell silent for a moment before saying, “If she hurt you, I will repay it double.”
Ruan Shengyu looked at Jin Chengyan’s handsome profile. She had always thought he was more attractive than Yan Beiting, but it was too late; she had fallen for Yan Beiting first. For so many years, he had been a thorn in her heart—unforgettable and impossible to remove.
“Double? Are you saying you found someone to violate Qiao Nuo?” Ruan Shengyu chuckled lightly, thinking that someone like Jin Chengyan would never stoop to such actions.
In truth, she hadn’t considered having other men harm Qiao Nuo; that idea had come from Ni Yue. It seemed that women could be truly ruthless when wronged.
However, seeing the coldness in Jin Chengyan’s expression made Ruan Shengyu realize she might have guessed correctly!
Jin Chengyan really did find someone to violate Qiao Nuo!
“A Yan!” Ruan Shengyu exclaimed in shock. Did Jin Chengyan really go that far?!
“I told you before that I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you, not even Yan San.” The promise from years ago was long forgotten by Ruan Shengyu, yet Jin Chengyan still upheld it!
In that moment, Ruan Shengyu didn’t know what to say—was it gratitude? Was it sadness? Or was it something else entirely?
“Alright, you should rest well. I need to head to the office,” Jin Chengyan said as he squeezed Ruan Shengyu’s hand.
Ruan Shengyu was at a loss for words and could only nod. She still hadn’t fully processed the fact that Jin Chengyan had sought out someone to harm Qiao Nuo!
Soon after, the vast living room was left empty with only her remaining; Jin Chengyan had left.
But in her ears echoed another phrase—“If you dare harm Qiao Nuo in any way, I will make you pay double!”
The speaker of those words was Yan Beiting!
Qiao Nuo felt completely disoriented. Jin Chengyan's words echoed in her mind; their entanglement was merely to ruin her innocence, just to take revenge for Ruan Shengyu!
But what about her? She had not only given her heart but also her body!
In the end, she even had to pretend that Jin Chengyan was no good at it, while he had ruined her innocence!
That bastard Jin Chengyan, that great deceiver!
Suddenly, a harsh honking sound pierced through Qiao Nuo's thoughts. She looked around for the source of the noise and soon spotted a man in a blue striped shirt approaching.
Yan Beiting.
Before Qiao Nuo could say anything, Yan Beiting pulled her into his arms tightly!
Qiao Nuo's eyes widened. What was going on with Yan Beiting?
However, his embrace quickly loosened, and he looked at her with concern.
"I heard you were taken to the police station. Are you okay now? Why didn’t you call me? Do you know how anxious I was when I heard you were taken away? How did you get picked up afterward?" Yan Beiting bombarded her with questions, leaving Qiao Nuo momentarily speechless.
"I... can you let go of me? It hurts." Yan Beiting's grip on her arm was quite strong, and when did he start worrying about her so much?
Realizing he was being too rough, Yan Beiting immediately released Qiao Nuo.
But his concern was genuine. No matter what happened yesterday, the police refused to disclose who had taken Qiao Nuo. There were not many powerful figures in Qin Cheng, yet Yan Beiting couldn't find a suitable reason to approach Qiao Nuo.
"It's nothing serious; I'm perfectly fine," Qiao Nuo shrugged. Aside from what happened with Jin Chengyan yesterday, everything else was just fine.
However, Yan Beiting did not think so. He looked at Qiao Nuo, who was clearly putting on a brave face, but he knew that if he continued to ask, she would definitely not respond.
If there was anyone to blame, it was their relationship, which was merely that of ordinary friends.
"Forget it. Where are you headed? I'll give you a ride," Yan Beiting said, feeling an endless sorrow in his heart. He truly didn't know how to approach Qiao Nuo, fearing that if he showed too much enthusiasm, it would scare her away.
Yet he also worried that if he showed no concern at all, she might feel neglected.
"No need, I can go by myself," Qiao Nuo replied, unsure why Yan Beiting was being so enthusiastic towards her. Perhaps he was just being helpful?
However, Yan Beiting seemed determined to insist on seeing her off!
At that moment, Qiao Nuo's phone rang; it was a call from the police station.
It was a call she had to answer. She gestured an apology to Yan Beiting and stepped aside to take the call.
"Miss Qiao? This is the police station. The complainant in your case has withdrawn their complaint. You just need to come by the station to sign some papers, and you won't be troubled again in the future!"
Qiao Nuo listened in surprise to the officer's voice. Was this a joke?
Jin Chengyan had gone to great lengths to ruin Qiao Nuo’s life for Ruan Shengyu’s revenge, even sacrificing two people's reputations in the process. Yet now the complainant had withdrawn the case?
Did they really think it could all be resolved privately?
"Okay, I understand," Qiao Nuo said as she hung up the phone, taking a deep breath.
Standing behind her, Yan Beiting unexpectedly noticed something on Qiao Nuo's neck that resembled a hickey. Unable to resist, he stepped forward and brushed aside her tied-up hair. In an instant, those marks became clear in his sight.
Feeling someone touching her hair, Qiao Nuo instinctively turned around and looked at Yan Beiting with caution.
She placed her hand on the back of her neck, where Yan Beiting had touched her earlier, and suddenly realized that it was the mark left by Jin Chengyan after his relentless pursuit last night!
Her face instantly flushed.
"You..." Yan Beiting felt as if his mind had exploded! "What did Jin Chengyan do to you?"
He had warned Ruan Shengyu that if they dared to harm Qiao Nuo even a little, he would not show mercy! If Jin Chengyan dared to hurt Qiao Nuo for the sake of Ruan Shengyu, he would not care about their brotherhood!
Qiao Nuo tightened her grip on her clothes; she truly had no idea what Yan Beiting was worrying about for her!
Did he think they were friends just because of the misunderstanding during their last blind date?
"My relationship with Jin Chengyan has nothing to do with you." When Qiao Nuo spoke Jin Chengyan's name, she felt a pang of discomfort. Indeed, it hurt to have given her heart only to be rejected; who wouldn't feel sad about that?
But how could this prevent Yan Beiting from overthinking? The kiss marks on Qiao Nuo, and Jin Chengyan's almost obsessive care for Ruan Shengyu! And yet, Qiao Nuo was so resistant to his concern!
"Qiao Nuo, I really am worried about you! Please don’t push my concern away." Yan Beiting felt that now was not the time to tell Qiao Nuo that she was the girl he had been yearning for over six years; she was too resistant towards men! He feared that he might make things worse.
"Thank you, but I don't need anyone's concern right now. I can handle things on my own!" With that, Qiao Nuo left Yan Beiting behind and walked towards her small apartment.
This afternoon, Qiao Chen would be returning from school, and she didn’t want him to discover anything unusual!
But in her current state, how could she avoid raising any suspicions with Qiao Chen?
She went to the supermarket to buy some of the dishes that Qiao Chen usually liked; he must not have eaten well at school! She wondered how he was doing academically and whether he would be able to get into college!
Thinking about these things made Qiao Nuo completely forget about that person, Jin Chengyan!
It was truly laughable; if he wanted to ruin her, why did he have to get personally involved? He could easily find someone else to do those things!
So, somewhere in Jin Chengyan's heart, he still couldn't bear to hurt her, right?
Qiao Nuo didn't dare to think too much about it. She was afraid that if she gave Jin Chengyan a reason, she would end up forgiving him!
After buying groceries and returning to the small apartment, she prepared a meal for Qiao Chen. Looking at the time, he should have been back by now. Just as she was about to call him, he walked in.
Qiao Chen was wearing a hoodie with the hood up, looking like a typical carefree youth.
"Qiao Chen, why are you still wearing your hood at home? Go wash your hands and come eat!" Seeing Qiao Chen made Qiao Nuo feel a bit better.
However, Qiao Chen seemed to deliberately avoid her. "I'm not eating. I'm so tired from class; I'm going to take a nap."
Qiao Nuo felt that something was off. She quickly got up from her chair and walked over to Qiao Chen, pulling off his hood. Sure enough, she saw a bruise on his face.
"You got into a fight again?"
