Zhang Qiang clutched his leg, wailing like a pig being slaughtered. "Ouch! My leg! You hit someone and still want to run? No way! My leg might be broken; I could end up in a wheelchair for life! You owe me money, that's only fair!" His voice was exaggerated and hypocritical, his acting worthy of an Oscar.
I glanced at the time; eight minutes had already passed. My heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible hand, and Rooftop Girl could jump at any moment. "Sir, I really have urgent matters to attend to. If you need help, I can call an ambulance, but you truly weren't hit." My tone carried a hint of pleading, but more than that was urgency.
Zhang Qiang grabbed my car door, blocking my escape. A greedy smile spread across his greasy face. "Stop talking nonsense! Pay up! Ten thousand yuan! Not a penny less! If you don't pay today, you won't leave here!" His brazen attitude ignited my anger; I wanted nothing more than to kick him away, but Rooftop Girl worried me more—I had to stay calm.
I tried reasoning with him again, hoping he would let me go. "Sir, you really weren't hit. What you're doing is extortion and you could face legal consequences for this. I need to save a girl who's about to jump off a building!" My voice trembled slightly, but I fought to maintain my composure, trying to make him understand the gravity of his mistake.
But Zhang Qiang wouldn't listen; instead, he shouted louder, "Just some loser who needs money—what's so special about saving her? If you don't pay up, you can't leave!" He drew the attention of some onlookers who gathered around like a pack of wild dogs, pointing fingers at me without any intention of helping; instead, they added fuel to the fire. "Ouch! You hit someone and still want to run—how despicable!" "Exactly! Today's youth are unbelievable!" "Hurry up and pay; you're delaying her treatment—can you afford that?"
I knew I couldn't delay any longer; I had to find a way out. Rooftop Girl could jump at any moment—I couldn't waste any more time here.
I pulled out my phone to call the police, intending to use the law to deal with this rogue and make him realize that extortion has consequences.
But Zhang Qiang was quick; he snatched my phone away as if it were a treasure and smashed it on the ground without hesitation. With a loud crack, my phone shattered into pieces, the screen instantly fracturing like a spider's web.
"Want to call the police? Not so easy! If you don't pay today, no one leaves!" He laughed triumphantly, revealing his yellow teeth. My anxiety peaked; I felt trapped like a beast in a cage with no way out.
I forced myself to calm down as my mind raced for solutions. The image of the girl on the rooftop kept flashing in my mind—her desperate eyes seemed to plead for help. I couldn't give up; I had to find a way.
Taking another deep breath, I focused on staying calm. I couldn't let this rogue cloud my judgment—Rooftop Girl was still waiting for me to save her.
I had a sudden inspiration and pretended to reason with the onlookers, hoping to gain some support. "Dear neighbors, you all saw it! He wasn't hit by me at all; this is just a scam! You must help me set things right!" I tried to make my voice sound as pitiful as possible, hoping the crowd would side with me.
