Shui Ying Xue's eyes flickered, and a slight smile crept onto her lips. She first took a couple of slow steps back, then suddenly let out a long cry, immediately dashing toward the center of the crowd like an arrow released from a bow.
"My dear brother, how could you do this to me?"
As she cried out, Shui Ying Xue quickly ran to the Straw Stack, lifting her skirt as she went. With a determined expression, she closed her eyes and gritted her teeth, as if overwhelmed by emotion and losing her balance. She swung her arm in a wide arc before suddenly collapsing onto the straw.
What the onlookers couldn't see was that in her hand was a pair of rusty scissors specifically meant for matchmaking. With her swing, the red thread connecting two people instantly snapped.
The moment the red thread broke, Zhan Qian Zhao looked at the Taoist with confusion filling his eyes. He instinctively glanced down at himself before quickly focusing on the strange girl sobbing at his feet.
"Brother, that day, I was just trying to provoke you... How could you really take my words seriously and find a man to make me angry?"
With two strands of straw stuck in her hair, Shui Ying Xue tugged at her sleeve to partially cover her face, sobbing while ensuring her voice was loud enough for those nearby to hear.
Those who already believed that two men loving each other was an affront to the heavens finally found a reason to blame one of the handsome men tied up. Upon hearing Shui Ying Xue's words, they erupted into excited discussions about this new gossip.
"Zhan'er, you..." The foul Taoist tied up nearby heard Shui Ying Xue's words and abruptly lifted his head in disbelief.
Though the red thread had been severed, there was still a lingering connection. Shui Ying Xue peeked through her fingers and saw that the red thread wrapped around the Taoist's arm was fluttering as if it wanted to reconnect with its other half.
If the thread sought out someone else to reconnect instead of being guided by her hand, it would be an even greater mistake.
In a panic, Shui Ying Xue scrambled over to the Taoist's side. Using all her strength, she grabbed his tattered collar and pulled herself up, disregarding his filthy face. With all her might, she slapped him hard before using that momentum to yank the red thread aside. The thread came loose from him and was tightly clenched in her palm.
"You shameless witch, do you really think you can keep my brother all to yourself?" Shui Ying Xue shouted loudly.
"Good!" The crowd below began to clap and cheer, some eager ones even starting to untie Zhan Qian Zhao.
With half a rope still tied around Zhan Qian Zhao, he noticed people gathering closer to him. If that half of the red thread connected with someone else, it would be troublesome.
Shui Ying Xue quickly climbed back to Zhan Qian Zhao's side, grabbing his pant leg and positioning herself between him and the crowd. She kept murmuring, "My dear, you've suffered!"
Zhan Qian Zhao looked down and saw a girl clinging to him like a little squirrel hugging its acorn, her wide eyes vigilantly watching those around them, as if afraid someone would snatch her treasure away.
He couldn't help but feel a stir in his heart. With his enchanting peach blossom eyes sparkling mischievously, he leaned closer to her ear and whispered softly, "Thank you for your bravery, but I truly don't know you. I can't bear such a title... um, my dear."
Shui Ying Xue paused for a moment, then leaned in closer to his ear, gritting her teeth as she said, "Do you want to fulfill a legendary romance with that stinky Taoist and head to the underworld together? Or should I sacrifice my reputation to save your life and give you the public praise of a devoted man? You choose."
Zhan Qian Zhao chuckled softly, his gaze lingering on Shui Ying Xue's soft body pressed against his chest. He replied leisurely, "Well... then I suppose I shall obey your command."
