Early the next morning, Li Qiang got up without a word. He first went to the watermelon patch and felt every watermelon with his hands, then he picked out the ones that had ripened yesterday and ran home.
He had thought about it for a long time last night, and the conclusion he reached was exactly what he had in mind: the watermelons he touched would grow quickly. This news excited him all night.
Despite not sleeping at all, he was still full of energy, cradling the watermelon in his arms, eager to share this good news with Aunt Yufeng so she could enjoy it too.
“Aunt, I’m back…” Li Qiang shouted as he opened the courtyard gate, his heart filled with joy.
“Qiang Zi, why are you up so early? I haven’t made breakfast yet!” Li Yufeng came out of the kitchen, wearing a simple white shirt and wiping the sweat from her forehead, looking very virtuous.
Seeing Li Yufeng, Li Qiang thought to himself that Aunt Yufeng was truly wonderful—she was beautiful and not at all flirtatious; no other woman in the village could compare to her.
“Aunt, look what I brought back!” Li Qiang proudly displayed the watermelon in his hands to Li Yufeng.
Li Yufeng was taken aback for a moment and asked, “Qiang Zi, where did you get this watermelon? Which family in the village has watermelons this big already?”
Li Qiang exclaimed, “Oh come on! Who would give me a watermelon? This is our own homegrown watermelon! What do you think? Isn’t it big?”
“Our own homegrown?”
“Yep!”
Li Yufeng saw that Li Qiang didn’t seem to be lying, but she still couldn’t believe that their homegrown watermelons could be this large. After all, it was still early in the season for watermelons to ripen.
“Is it really our watermelon?” Even though she was already touching it, she still found it hard to believe.
Li Qiang grew anxious and said, “Oh my dear Aunt, why don’t you believe me? This really is from our own farm! If you don’t believe me, I can take you to see the patch!”
“No need for that. Come on, let’s check if this one is ripe. If it is, we can prepare to sell some watermelons.” Li Yufeng no longer doubted him and smiled brightly. With these early watermelons, they could surely make a good profit. She had been worried about Li Qiang’s school fees before, but now things were looking much better.
"Wow, Aunt, this watermelon is so red, and the seeds are so small!" As the watermelon was cut open, Li Qiang exclaimed in surprise. He quickly took a bite of the piece that Li Yufeng handed him, and the sweet juice swirled around in his mouth, giving his taste buds a delightful experience. "It's really sweet! Aunt, you should try some too!"
Li Yufeng, who had initially planned to make breakfast, decided to put that on hold. The watermelon was large, and it seemed like they would have enough for two meals.
"Qiang Zi, are there many watermelons like this in the fields?"
"Um, not bad. They should be ready to sell soon, I think?" Li Qiang replied hesitantly. He didn't want to sound too certain since he was only guessing; if it turned out he was wrong, Aunt Yu Feng might think he was lying.
"Oh, that's good! That's good!" Li Yufeng felt pleased and didn't mind Li Qiang's vague answer. "By the way, Qiang Zi, could you go to your Aunt Yu Zhen's house and buy two bags of salt? We're out of salt at home."
Li Qiang nodded in agreement. He had made plans with Guo Yuzhen to meet up at the Gourd Shed later that day, but hearing Li Yufeng's request made his heart race with excitement.
Now that he had learned about matters between men and women, he felt an insatiable urge stirring within him, wanting to find a way to satisfy it.
"Alright, I'll go right now and maybe hang out with that silly Xiao Fei!" Li Qiang chuckled as he left the house amidst Li Yufeng's playful scolding.
Guo Yuzhen's house was located in the center of the village, making it a prime spot as it was also the only convenience store and game room in the area.
As he approached the store, Li Qiang spotted Xiao Fei sitting on the ground with dirty hands fiddling with himself. Amused, Li Qiang called out, "Hey, Xiao Fei! What are you doing?"
Xiao Fei didn't even look up at Li Qiang and replied, "Playing with my little bird. Can't you tell? You're so dumb!"
Li Qiang was taken aback and thought to himself how foolish this kid was for calling him dumb. However, knowing that Xiao Fei wasn't very bright, he decided not to get angry and said, "That's not how you should play with birds!"
Xiao Fei looked up and argued back, "What's wrong with it? My dad plays with his bird like this!"
With a chuckle, Li Qiang couldn't help but laugh out loud. "Your dad plays with his bird? Doesn't your dad's bird go into your mom's nest?"
Xiao Fei opened his eyes and looked at Li Qiang for a long while, then said as if he understood, "What bird's nest? Are you talking about my mother's black bird's nest with weeds growing on it?" Li Qiang laughed and said, "Yes, the bird's nest with black weeds growing on it. So? Won't your mother's bird's nest let your father's bird burrow into it?" "No!" Xiao Fei continued to play with his bird and said, "My mother seemed to say that my father's bird was useless, so he let him play with his bird when he had nothing to do. Qiang Zi, brother, you see, I learned how to play with birds from my father!" Li Qiang clapped his hands and laughed so hard that he fell backwards. She rolled her eyes at him and said, "What do you want to do, little bastard? Do you want to fuck me while your Uncle Jia Ping is not around?" Slut! Li Qiang was excited by her bold words. Looking at the big lump of flesh on her chest and thinking of the bird's nest she had always kept from Uncle Jia Ping, he had a reaction.
