As night fell, a burst of manic laughter suddenly echoed from the corner of Drunken Immortal Tavern: "Hahaha, the stars say there's a good show tonight, a good show..."
The proprietress of the nearby Tea House was about to complain when a group of men in black suddenly surged out from the alley, weapons in hand, charging straight at the "madman."
Xu Yuan still wore a foolish grin on his face, but a glint of sharpness flickered in his eyes. He swayed back, but his tattered fan inadvertently blocked a Dark Arrow aimed at him.
"After pretending to be mad for so many years, you haven't let your skills go to waste," sneered the leader of the black-clad men. "The last remnant of the Xu Family should come to an end."
"Oh dear, aren't you from Lord Zhou's faction?" Xu Yuan maintained his mad demeanor. "The stars said you would come to play with me tonight!"
"Stop pretending!" the black-clad man barked. "Hand over the Bronze Fragment in your hand, and we might spare your life!"
Xu Yuan's eyes narrowed, and he abruptly unfurled his tattered fan. "Want it? Then let's see if you have the ability!"
Before he finished speaking, his figure flashed like a ghost behind the black-clad men. The seemingly worn-out paper fan in his hand transformed into a deadly weapon, each swing carrying lethal intent.
"You do have some skills," the leader of the black-clad men sneered. "But do you think we sent only this few?"
Torches suddenly flared at both ends of the alley as more black-clad men emerged from the shadows. Xu Yuan found himself surrounded, his situation becoming dire.
At that moment, a silver hairpin flew through the air, striking one of the black-clad men's wrists just as he was about to swing his sword.
"You cowardly rats hiding in the shadows, dare you fight openly?" A clear voice accompanied by footsteps rang out. Under the moonlight, Liu Ying appeared in plain clothes, holding a Jade Flute as she walked gracefully from the alley.
"Liu Ying?" Xu Yuan was taken aback and then showed a reproachful expression. "What are you doing here? Hurry and leave!"
"If I hadn't come, you'd be in for some trouble tonight," Liu Ying replied lightly as she stepped beside him. "Besides, didn't we agree to work together?"
Xu Yuan felt warmth in his heart but still feigned madness. "Oh dear, isn't this Master Liu from Qintian Observatory here to find a madman for fortune-telling?"
"It's up to you now," Liu Ying said softly while slipping a small bundle into his hand.
Xu Yuan received it and immediately recognized what it was—the two pieces of Bronze Mirror shards! Just as he was about to speak, the leader of the black-clad men shouted, "Attack together! Kill without mercy!"
Dozens of black-clad men surged forward. Xu Yuan unfurled his tattered fan while Liu Ying raised her Jade Flute; they stood back to back.
"Can you play the flute?" Xu Yuan asked quietly.
"A little," Liu Ying replied with a charming smile. "I've learned some self-defense techniques."
Before she finished speaking, her Jade Flute had already struck out. The seemingly delicate instrument moved with surprising agility in her hands; each move cleverly avoided vital points while restraining their enemies.
Xu Yuan's martial prowess shone through as he took down several black-clad men with his fan. The two fought seamlessly together—one soft and one hard—carving a bloody path through their encirclement.
"That way!" Liu Ying pointed towards a dark alley. "I've checked the terrain; we can escape from there."
Xu Yuan understood the situation and suddenly quickened the pace with the broken fan in his hand. "The stars say it's going to rain tonight. Did you bring an umbrella?" As he spoke, his other hand had already raised a pouch of powdered medicine.
The man in black immediately began to cough uncontrollably. By the time the smoke cleared, the two had vanished into the dark alley.
"But are we going to find Yan Lao?" Liu Ying asked while hurrying along.
"How did you know?" Xu Yuan looked at her in surprise.
"The embroidered handkerchief you gave me had a hidden mark indicating Yan Lao's residence," Liu Ying replied softly. "I specifically went to investigate today and found out he has been moved to a residence in the southern part of the city."
Xu Yuan looked at her with a complex expression. "Are you worried about me?"
Liu Ying turned her head away, blushing. "Who told you to give me this?" She pointed at the jade pendant on her collar.
Just as Xu Yuan was about to say something, distant shouts of pursuers suddenly echoed. He pulled Liu Ying into a corner, and they pressed closely together, even able to hear each other's heartbeats.
"I'm sorry for dragging you into this," Xu Yuan whispered.
"Don't say such foolish things," Liu Ying gazed into his eyes. "Did we not agree to uncover the truth together?"
Moonlight spilled through the gaps in the eaves, illuminating their profiles. Xu Yuan looked at Liu Ying, who was so close, and suddenly recalled that fateful night when a little girl had handed him a bowl of warm water.
At that moment, a White Dove suddenly landed on the eaves, carrying a note in its beak. Before they could examine it, a familiar sound of Dizi music drifted from afar, reminiscent of that night long ago.
Liu Ying's heart skipped a beat. "That Dizi sound..."
Xu Yuan's expression changed. "This is bad; it's people from Anyuan Marquis Manor!" He took something from his pocket and handed it to Liu Ying. "Quickly go! Remember, tomorrow at Chen time, under The Purple Forbidden Enclosure."
Before he finished speaking, torches began to light up deep within the alley.
