Xu Shen fell into deep thought after hearing these words. He was reluctant to choose either of the two methods presented to him. If there were any other solutions, he would never agree to these options. However, considering the circumstances, he felt that neither option was particularly excessive. After all, it was because of his own actions that someone else had spent so much money. If he hadn’t been curious and entered that restaurant, he probably wouldn’t have met that person's parents, and if he hadn’t met them, he wouldn’t have spent so much money. Even if his curiosity had driven him to meet someone, he could have chosen to eat something much cheaper.
Thus, this situation was closely related to him. Given that, he couldn’t just stand by and watch his friend end up on the streets. However, both methods were difficult choices for him. The best solution seemed to be to return all the money to his friend.
More precisely, it would be a loan to him, which would be much more comfortable than living in his own home. At least his friend wouldn’t disturb his life. But if he simply lent him the money without any reason, it was likely that his friend wouldn’t pay him back, and Xu Shen would feel very uncomfortable about it.
Yet in the current situation, he knew he had to make a choice. If he hesitated too long and couldn’t decide, he would likely end up being influenced by others’ opinions. If that happened and his friend didn’t leave by the end of the year, it could become quite troublesome. Although his house was large enough that it wouldn’t bother him for someone else to live there, he could certainly explain his living habits to ensure that his friend didn’t disrupt him. All of this was possible.
But it was still better than returning the money.
After pondering for a while, Xu Shen made up his mind and decided to speak up.
However, at that moment, his friend probably thought that Xu Shen would never let him stay at his house because he knew Xu Shen had a habit of not wanting others to intrude on his life. Therefore, he assumed Xu Shen would give him all the money back. This way, not only would he be able to honor his parents with the money, but he would also secure his living expenses for next month. It seemed like a win-win situation; the thought of getting his money back filled him with joy.
But unexpectedly, Xu Shen’s response startled him.
Xu Shen said, “Since these two options are presented before me, I will tell you my choice. If you are willing to stay with me, I don’t mind at all. This house is quite large; you can stay upstairs and just avoid coming down unless necessary. I prefer living downstairs anyway. So I don’t see why this wouldn’t work out. If we want to eat something together, we can sit down and share a meal. But if there’s nothing going on, let’s not meet at home today.
I have a lot of work to do; you do too. Of course, you might not care much about this work, but it’s different for me. When I get home, I have plenty of tasks waiting for me. If you can meet these few requests of mine, then there’s no reason we can’t make this work.
After all, it often feels a bit lonely when I’m here by myself in this big house. If you could stay upstairs for a while longer, it might bring some liveliness into my life. It would be good practice for me to get used to having another person around; it might even help me when I’m looking for a girlfriend in the future.
I can’t just stay alone like this forever. If someone suddenly appears in my life out of nowhere, it might feel a bit strange at first. But now you can experience this kind of life ahead of time as well; plus, I can properly thank you.”
