Li Yingxue found herself at a loss for words on the other end of the line. Faced with a familiar number and an equally familiar voice, she was momentarily unsure of what to say or do. After all, it had been a long time since they last communicated, and receiving a call out of the blue left her feeling somewhat disoriented.
Before she could gather her thoughts to respond, the caller continued speaking. “So this time, it’s my treat. Please don’t argue with me about it. You can choose whatever you want to eat; after all, I’m treating you. This opportunity is quite rare, so don’t let it slip away. You’ve always wanted me to take you out for a meal, but I never had the time before. This time, we must seize the moment. Don’t miss out on this chance, or you’ll regret it.”
Li Yingxue was completely taken aback by this unexpected news. She never anticipated receiving such a call at this moment; it felt as if this person was fading from her memory. To suddenly hear from him now and to be invited out to discuss such matters left her genuinely surprised. Although he insisted on treating her, she had never kept track of such things between them. They had once been very good friends, but for reasons unknown, they had lost all contact one day.
Their relationship had been strong before, yet at some point, they stopped communicating entirely. It was as if they had developed an unspoken understanding—she never reached out to him, and he never reached out to her either. Despite not having any major conflicts between them, it was puzzling how things had turned out this way.
In recent years, they hadn’t exchanged any messages or used any communication tools at all. None of the apps she used seemed to have any trace of him. She had thought their relationship might have come to an end; even though they had once been close friends, some friendships simply cannot withstand the test of time. She began to feel that he might not have been a true friend after all—because true friends remain in your life no matter how much time passes.
She never expected that someone she had once cared for deeply would fade away over time. Initially, she felt a twinge of regret about their dwindling connection, but eventually came to terms with it. Life often unfolds this way; although they had once shared a friendly bond, perhaps their fates had simply diverged.
Now, unexpectedly receiving a call years later—especially when she was in good spirits—left her feelings tangled and complex. She didn’t know whether to feel happy or sad about this sudden reconnection.
