As the night deepened in the capital, Xu Yuan walked through a narrow alley near the Qintian Observatory. He had just left the palace, and the Empress Dowager's words still echoed in his ears—"The Xu Family Miss is virtuous and gentle, a rare match indeed."
At that moment, a Dark Arrow whistled through the air! He sidestepped to avoid it and said coldly, "Since you’re here, why hide in the shadows?"
Three masked figures emerged at the alley's entrance, the leader wielding a long sword. "Master Xu has quite the skill. Have you already abandoned your duties at the Northern Frontier to return for a banquet?"
"Oh?" Xu Yuan opened his folding fan. "It seems someone is quite interested in me."
"Then take a look at this!" One of them threw an object that glimmered ominously in the moonlight. Xu Yuan focused his gaze and realized it was a fragment of a Bronze Mirror!
"Where did you get this?" A cold light flashed in Xu Yuan's eyes. He recognized that this Lens was strikingly similar to the Bronze Mirror Liu Ying possessed.
"Master Xu need not concern himself with that." The leader sneered. "You should be thinking about the Empress Dowager's marriage proposal. The Xu Family Miss is far superior to certain indiscreet female officials."
"I see." Xu Yuan smirked. "The Xu family sent you to warn me?"
"Wrong." The leader revealed a sinister grin. "We are here to send you on your way!" With that, he tore off his veil, exposing a face marred by scars. Xu Yuan recognized him as one of Zhou Family's Death Warriors from years past.
"Remnants of the Zhou family!" Xu Yuan tightened his grip on his fan. "So it was you plotting behind my back."
"Shut up!" The leader barked. "Kill him!"
The three attackers struck simultaneously, their swords flashing like rain. Xu Yuan used his fan to parry, moving with an eerie grace through the alley. Suddenly, he snapped his fan shut and aimed directly at the leader's face. The man hurriedly retreated, causing his veil to fall away and revealing half of his scarred visage.
"It’s you!" Xu Yuan recognized him as one of the assassins involved in the siege against the Xu Family years ago. "It seems the Zhou family is truly unwilling to let go."
Before he could finish speaking, another group of black-clad figures leaped down from the rooftops, surrounding Xu Yuan completely.
"Master Xu!" A clear voice suddenly rang out from the dark alley. An arrow shot through the air, its tip tied with a secret letter!
Xu Yuan caught the letter and saw it read: "The position of Tian Shiyuan can break the formation." The handwriting… it was unmistakably Liu Ying's!
His heart raced: When did Liu Ying arrive in the capital?
Scarface clearly hadn’t anticipated any assistance; he shouted fiercely, "Don’t mind that! Kill him!"
But Xu Yuan had already grasped the key from the letter. He recalled Liu Ying mentioning Tian Shiyuan's position and unfolded his fan, pointing toward a specific direction under the moonlight. "The five stars aligned; breaking it is easy!"
A stir ran through the ranks of black-clad men. Scarface roared in fury, "Don’t listen to his nonsense! Kill!"
In the chaos, Xu Yuan shifted his steps, wielding his fan like a sword, each move targeting weaknesses in their formation. Though those in black were skilled fighters, they always seemed a beat too slow and gradually fell into disadvantage.
"You are merely pawns of the Xu family," Xu Yuan sneered. "Tell me why they are targeting Liu Ying?"
Scarface grinned maliciously. "You’ll find out soon enough. The Empress Dowager’s decree is not so easily defied!"
Before the words had left his mouth, another arrow shot from the shadows, striking Scarface in the throat! The remaining figures in black, seeing this, quickly retreated.
Xu Yuan followed the direction of the arrow but found only a shard of the Bronze Mirror lying quietly on the ground, reflecting the starlight of Tian Shiyuan.
What was happening? Why was Liu Ying in the capital? And what were the remnants of the Xu and Zhou families plotting?
In the distance, the sound of a crowing rooster announced that it was already past midnight. Xu Yuan picked up the shard of the mirror, his mind racing with thoughts. He knew that a greater storm was brewing in the capital.
And could that person who had secretly come to his aid be Liu Ying?
