"Who can prove it?" Wei Jiawei asked from the side.
"It's the middle of the night, where am I supposed to find someone to prove it? I'm the only one at home."
Qi Fangyu seemed a bit impatient.
Officer Zhao glanced at Qi Fangyu's hand, which was still tapping on the table, and continued to ask, "You live alone?"
"My wife went on a business trip a week ago."
Officer Zhao thought for a moment. "Do you know when she will be back from her trip?"
Qi Fangyu shook his head again. "It's hard to say. She's been gone for a week; this disappearance has nothing to do with her, right?"
"Mr. Qi is right. We'll stop our questions here for today. The police will keep a close watch on this building in the coming days. If you remember anything else, please contact us promptly."
As Officer Zhao spoke and walked toward the door, he suddenly stopped, looking around and noticing that Xiao Ying and Xi Yue were missing.
At that moment, a few barks came from a room inside. Everyone paused for a moment and followed the sound, finding Xiao Ying sitting on the floor of the inner room, cradling a large white dog in her arms and gently petting it, while Xi Yue stood slightly farther away, looking somewhat frightened.
"What are you doing?" Qi Fangyu asked sternly.
The dog, upon seeing its owner, obediently walked over to his side.
Xiao Ying stood up, casually brushing off her clothes with a smile. "Is this dog Mr. Qi's? It's so adorable! I couldn't help but come in and play with it a bit. Mr. Qi won't mind, right?"
Qi Fangyu frowned slightly. "Just hurry up and leave."
"I'm leaving now." Xiao Ying walked toward the door but paused halfway to turn back. "By the way, this cement floor is really cold. It's uncomfortable to sit on. Haven't you considered putting down a carpet or something?"
Qi Fangyu seemed somewhat distracted. "No, it's inconvenient with a dog around."
"That's true."
As Xiao Ying spoke, she had already returned to the living room, but she wasn't in a hurry to head for the door. Instead, she strolled leisurely around the room. "Mr. Qi is a painter?"
She glanced around at the scattered art supplies and some unfinished paintings, finally stopping in front of a life-sized portrait hanging on the wall.
The painting had a simple composition: in front of a vast blue sea stood the back of a Red-Dressed Woman, facing the wind. "This painting is beautiful. Is it of Mr. Qi's wife?"
"It doesn't necessarily have to be of one's lover. For a painter, as long as there is inspiration, anyone can become the best model."
Hearing Xiao Ying praise his painting, Qi Fangyu's expression turned proud.
Xiao Ying gazed intently at the painting before her, her azure eyes revealing no emotion, as if hiding all her thoughts. Suddenly, she smiled brightly, her beauty radiant. "I really like Mr. Qi's paintings, but aside from this one, all I see here are unfinished works. I wonder if I could admire some of your other pieces?"
A flicker of light appeared in Qi Fangyu's eyes as he pondered. "Those are all put away; they're not easy to take out."
"Well, maybe another time."
Xiao Ying patted the big dog's head, and the dog affectionately nudged her with its nose. "I really get along well with this dog. Is it possible for me to come and visit it occasionally?"
"That—" Qi Fangyu hesitated, her expression showing reluctance. After a moment, she replied, "I don't like to be disturbed when I'm painting. If it's not during my painting time, then it should be fine to visit occasionally."
"That's wonderful!"
A bright smile spread across Xiao Ying's face, as if she had received a precious promise.
