"There's something off about Qi Fangyu."
As they walked out of the residential building, Officer Zhao's expression was serious as he lowered his voice and spoke slowly. "Throughout the entire questioning, his fingers were constantly tapping on the table."
He furrowed his brow slightly, his eyes revealing the sharp intuition accumulated from years of handling cases.
"Doesn't that mean he's quite nervous?" Xiao Ying tilted her head slightly, a glimmer of thought in her eyes as she analyzed methodically. "If what Xi Yue said is true, and he killed someone last night during that heavy rain, he wouldn't have been able to go out to deal with the body.
And today, with Fan Wei missing and the police searching the building, he probably hasn't had a chance to leave."
As she spoke, she unconsciously rubbed her chin lightly.
"Are you saying the body is still in his house?" Wei Jiawei's eyes widened in surprise as he couldn't help but ask.
Xiao Ying didn't answer directly; instead, she let a mysterious smile play on her lips and opened her fair palm to gesture for everyone to look.
A small piece of red fluff lay quietly in her hand, so fine that it was nearly invisible unless one looked closely.
Facing the puzzled gazes of the others, she maintained her enigmatic smile without saying a word.
Officer Zhao carefully pinched the fluff with his fingertips and brought it closer to his eyes, squinting as he examined it for a moment before slowly saying, "This looks like carpet fiber?"
"Exactly," Xiao Ying affirmed with a nod, a hint of pride in her eyes. "I found this in that dog's fur. Do you remember when I asked him if he considered laying down a carpet? In this matter, Qi Fangyu wasn't truthful.
If I'm not mistaken, there should have originally been a red carpet in that room. Just think about it—where has that carpet gone?"
She spoke while gently tapping her fingers on the table, as if guiding everyone’s thoughts.
“He shouldn’t have had a chance to throw it away. Could it be with the body?” Wei Jiawei asked, scratching his head in confusion.
“It’s very likely that the body was wrapped in this carpet and hidden away,” Xiao Ying affirmed, nodding confidently. “Moreover, it’s probably hidden in the place where he displayed his paintings; otherwise, how could there be such a large space in the room?”
She squinted slightly, as if envisioning the layout of the room in her mind.
“But there’s nothing resembling a storage room in the house,” Wei Jiawei countered, his brows furrowed tightly.
“I have some ideas about that, but I’m not sure yet, so I’ll keep it to myself for now,” Xiao Ying teased, winking mysteriously.
Wei Jiawei pouted, clearly dissatisfied. “Always being so secretive. If you’re not going to say anything, then don’t.”
He crossed his arms over his chest, a hint of displeasure on his face.
“It’s a pity we don’t have any evidence yet; we can’t search his house.”
Officer Zhao sighed helplessly and continued, “However, I share that suspicion. That’s why I mentioned earlier that the police will be keeping an eye on this place. If there is a body, I believe Qi Fangyu wouldn’t dare to act recklessly for now.”
As he spoke, he carefully placed the red fiber into a small bag and handed it to Wei Jiawei with a serious instruction. “Take this back to the forensic department for testing. Also, have someone monitor Qi Fangyu’s movements over the next few days.”
"Are you saying that Qi Fangyu killed Fan Wei?" Wei Jiawei still couldn't let it go and continued to press for answers.
"Not necessarily," Officer Zhao shook his head, then turned to Xi Yue, who had been standing quietly to the side, her face a bit pale. He asked gently, "Is this the man you saw last night?"
Xi Yue nervously tucked her short hair behind her ear, her face growing even paler from fear.
Facing a potential murderer who might have killed right before her eyes, while trying to maintain a facade of calmness, was far too difficult for a girl who was not yet twenty.
She shook her head slightly and said, her voice trembling, "I'm not sure."
"Fan Wei has been missing for three days. If Xi Yue saw a woman who was her, where has she been these past couple of days? What is her relationship with Qi Fangyu? What could be Qi Fangyu's motive for murder?"
Xiao Ying furrowed her brows slightly, lost in thought as she tossed out a series of questions. "And Qi Fangyu's wife wasn't home either, right? We can't rule out that there might have been other women who went to see him." As she spoke, she gently cradled her chin with her hand, her eyes revealing focus and contemplation.
Wei Jiawei rubbed his hair in frustration; it was already messy and now looked even more disheveled. He sighed helplessly and said, "So we still can't confirm the identity of the deceased?"
