“May I interject?”
Xiao Ying suddenly spoke up, sitting up straight with a sharp glint in her eyes. “According to Fan Wei's husband, they have been married for ten years. That means you and Fan Wei must have known each other for quite some time. Your marriage must also have lasted a while, right?”
She narrowed her eyes slightly, as if scrutinizing Qi Fangyu.
“Thirteen years,” Qi Fangyu replied tersely, his gaze evasive, unable to meet Xiao Ying’s eyes.
“Then your wife, Lin Hui, should also know Fan Wei, the one you studied painting with?” Xiao Ying pressed on, her voice low but carrying an undeniable force.
Qi Fangyu nodded. “She knows her, but she doesn’t know about my relationship with Fan Wei afterward.”
He quickly clarified, speaking rapidly as if eager to distance himself from something.
“Go on,” Xiao Ying urged him to continue, leaning back slightly in her chair with her arms crossed over her chest. “Why did you suddenly kill Fan Wei?”
“She blackmailed me into divorcing,” Qi Fangyu replied, a hint of anger and helplessness in his voice.
“After Lin Hui went on a business trip, Fan Wei told her family she was traveling, but she was actually with me. That night, she suddenly demanded that I divorce Lin Hui and be with her. I refused, and we argued in the room. She kept pressing me, and in a moment of rage, I grabbed her by the neck. By the time I realized what had happened, she was already dead.”
A look of pain crossed his face as he recalled that dreadful night.
“So you killed Fan Wei in the room?” Xiao Ying tilted her head and asked, a flicker of skepticism in her eyes and a subtle smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
Qi Fangyu remained oblivious to the doubt in Xiao Ying's words and nodded to continue. “Then I wrapped her body in the bedroom carpet and hid it in the cabinet where I keep my paintings.”
“That’s where you moved the painting to block the spot, right?” Xiao Ying asked confidently, as if she already knew the answer.
"How did you know?" Qi Fangyu asked in surprise, his eyes wide as he looked at Xiao Ying, confusion filling his gaze.
"The spot where you hung the painting shows no signs at all. If it had been there for a long time, there would usually be marks left on the wall, but there are none around that painting. It’s clear that it was just recently hung," Xiao Ying explained, a hint of pride in her tone as if she were showcasing her cleverness.
"I initially planned to dispose of the body somewhere far away, but then the police started investigating this building due to Fan Wei's disappearance," Qi Fangyu continued, regret evident on his face.
"So the body is still in its original place?" Wei Jiawei asked, sitting up straight with anticipation in his eyes. When he saw Qi Fangyu nod, he signaled for someone to take Qi Fangyu out.
As Wei Jiawei and Xiao Ying exited the interrogation room, Officer Zhao approached them. "I've sent someone to search for the body. Is there anything else you've discovered?"
His gaze was filled with concern as he looked at the two.
"Qi Fangyu's wife, Lin Hui, has been hiding something from us," Xiao Ying said seriously, her brow slightly furrowed as she fell into thought.
"Now that you mention it, I remember Lin Hui saying she didn't know Fan Wei," Wei Jiawei added, a look of realization crossing his face.
"Are you suggesting that this case can't be wrapped up just yet and that Qi Fangyu's wife is also a suspect?" Officer Zhao asked, narrowing his eyes slightly as if contemplating something.
Xiao Ying raised an eyebrow. "I'm afraid it goes beyond that. If I'm correct, the murderer isn't Qi Fangyu at all."
Her eyes shone with confidence and determination, leaving no room for doubt about her judgment.
Wei Jiawei asked in confusion, "Why are you so sure?"
His face was filled with confusion as he looked at Xiao Ying.
"Did you not hear what Qi Fangyu just said?" Xiao Ying glanced at him, a hint of a smile in her eyes. "He claimed that he killed Fan Wei in the room, but there isn't a single window in his entire house."
Her voice carried a teasing tone, as if she were testing Wei Jiawei.
Wei Jiawei's expression shifted to one of realization. "Your friend named Xi Yue saw the murder from his window, but Qi Fangyu doesn't know that. He probably thinks we're investigating Fan Wei, while the actual crime scene should be the living room, which has windows."
As he spoke, he patted his head, seemingly scolding himself for being careless.
"Not a bad reaction," Xiao Ying winked at him, her face breaking into an approving smile.
At that moment, Officer Zhao's phone rang. He answered it, responding a few times before turning to Xiao Ying and Wei Jiawei. "We found the body in the location Qi Fangyu mentioned. It's Fan Wei."
His voice carried a mix of relief and heaviness.
"So that means at least Qi Fangyu is aware of it, or perhaps he is the one who hid the body," Xiao Ying quickly remarked, her eyes reflecting deep thought as she analyzed the case.
Wei Jiawei furrowed his brow and speculated, "Is it possible that Qi Fangyu is protecting Lin Hui?"
Upon hearing this, Officer Zhao pondered for a moment before instructing the person on the other end of the line, "Bring Lin Hui back as well."
