At present, Cao Xilan and Lu Kao, along with Gao Yuanqian and Chen Yingqiong, met on the afternoon of December 21, without acting separately.
However, after Gao Yuanqian left, the remaining bodyguard, Qin Shan, was alone at the practice range. Would he go to the Gao Family to kill Lu Ming? But where could he be hiding?
These questions swirled in Ye He Shun's mind, yet he could not find an answer.
Seeing his puzzled expression, Fang Zhizheng reached out and patted his shoulder gently but encouragingly. He then handed over two small plastic bags containing something resembling dirt.
"Don’t think that just because you were investigating all afternoon, I wasn’t doing my own reconnaissance. It’s not hard to trace where modern people have been; they leave behind evidence. One of these bags contains dirt I scraped off Lu Kao’s car tire. The other was found at the parking spot where Lu Kao had parked outside. Over the past couple of days, Lu Kao has used his car, so by comparing these two samples, we can determine where he went on the 21st."
As Fang Zhizheng spoke, he gestured towards the two bags with confidence and certainty in his eyes.
"Why do you suspect Lu Kao? Besides, mud traces… From Shuifang Teahouse to the Gao Family, it’s all paved road; how could there be mud traces?" Ye He Shun asked, confusion etched on his face as he stared intently at Fang Zhizheng, as if seeking answers from his expression.
"That’s exactly the issue. After our discussion at the teahouse this morning, I paid attention to Lu Kao’s parking spot and noticed the mud traces, while Cao Xilan’s car showed none," Fang Zhizheng explained patiently, his gaze focused and earnest.
Yet Ye He Shun still didn’t understand what the mud traces indicated. What did they contribute to the case? His brows furrowed, his mouth slightly open as if he wanted to ask more questions.
But Fang Zhizheng told him that this was a direct lead to finding Lu Ming.
The next day, Ye He Shun and Fang Zhizheng went to a waste disposal site, accompanied by several police officers and police dogs.
As soon as they arrived at the landfill, a pungent odor hit them, causing Ye He Shun to wrinkle his nose and cover his mouth and nose with his hand.
After searching for a while in the garbage dump, they discovered a patch of ground that seemed to have been disturbed previously. Ye He Shun exchanged a glance with Fang Zhizheng, both understanding each other without words, and nodded in agreement.
The officers then began to dig up the soil.
Soon, they unearthed a charred corpse beneath the ground.
“Ah! How could this happen? He is…” Ye He Shun gasped in shock, his eyes widening in disbelief, his face etched with horror and astonishment.
Two officers lifted the body out, revealing extensive bruising on the back of the head.
Fang Zhizheng stood motionless, staring at the corpse, his eyes reflecting a complex mix of emotions—sadness, anger, and a hint of helplessness. Then he said, “The secret of the person in the bottle… so that’s how it is.”
“I’m sorry; this is all I can do for you,” Fang Zhizheng silently thought to himself.
He watched Gao Huan's figure as she walked further away, accompanied by medical personnel, until she boarded an ambulance.
The cold wind howled, tousling her long hair into disarray, making it impossible to discern her expression.
The ambulance slowly pulled away and soon disappeared from the long street where the the Gao Family resided.
At some point, Qin Shan appeared behind him.
The man walked without making a sound, as if he were gliding through the air.
His expression was as cold and stern as the winter itself, his gaze fixed on Fang Zhizheng's back.
As he drew closer, it seemed that Fang Zhizheng had already sensed his presence.
He asked, "Is your boss looking for me?"
His voice was steady and calm, devoid of any emotion.
