In the end, Su Meiniang did not wait for the day of her execution.
On the third day after her death sentence was pronounced, she was rescued from her prison cell.
At that time, Su Meiniang was nestled comfortably in a haystack, deep in sleep, when she was suddenly awakened by a series of loud banging sounds. Groggy and ready to curse, she opened her eyes to find a group of masked warriors in black fighting against the guards of the death row.
Before Su Meiniang could process what was happening, one of the black-clad figures darted forward like a ghost, slicing through the prison door with a sword. In a swift motion, he skillfully removed her shackles and without further ado, pulled her out into the night. What was going on? Had they rescued the wrong person?
The black-clad warrior was formidable; he wielded his sword with precision, cutting through the encirclement with deadly grace. He carved a bloody path through the chaos, ensuring that Su Meiniang emerged unscathed and safely outside the city.
Upon seeing the Second-in-Command waiting there, Su Meiniang momentarily froze. When she regained her senses, all that remained beside her was the excited Second-in-Command.
"Chieftain! You have finally returned safely."
"Chieftain, can you believe that Wen Qian is actually a prince? This news is simply astonishing! But we owe him our gratitude; otherwise, our village would be doomed!"
"Chieftain, do you know? Those corrupt officials embezzled disaster relief funds and tried to pin the blame on us in Chaoyang Village. Fortunately, His Majesty is wise and sent Prince Wen to investigate this matter. Now that we have solid evidence, those officials won't escape justice!"
"Chieftain, I know that the prince deceived you and it must hurt. But just remember he acted for the good of the people… Chieftain? Why are you crying?" The Second-in-Command suddenly sensed something was off as he turned back to lift the carriage curtain, only to find her in tears.
No wonder she felt that black-clad figure seemed so familiar; it was him! She understood everything the Second-in-Command had said; she knew it all too well.
But even so, he had still deceived her! Realizing that she had been discovered by the Second-in-Command, Su Meiniang buried her head in her knees and began to sob uncontrollably.
The prince and the bandit leader… Her Wen Qian would probably never return again!
Chaoyang Village remained the same, yet many people noticed that their Big Boss seemed a bit off.
No longer did she rush down the mountain with fervor, nor did she shout about robbing the rich to help the poor, causing chaos in the village.
Su Meiniang often sat quietly at the entrance of the mountain stronghold, resting her chin on her hands, staring blankly at the faintly visible official road below.
"If you miss him, why not go find him?"
The Second-in-Command couldn't bear to watch any longer. One day, he walked over to Su Meiniang and gently poked her with his finger. If only he had known it would come to this, he wouldn't have acted so hastily in the first place.
She had hidden when he was around, but now that he was gone, she was longing for him. What kind of situation was this?
"Who said I miss him? Who said I miss him!"
As a result, the Second-in-Command's good intentions were met with Su Meiniang's furious outburst. She yelled at the top of her lungs, nearly bringing down the entire village gate with her voice.
From then on, no one dared to advise Su Meiniang. She would sit there for an entire day without moving.
"Chieftain, since you're idle anyway, I have received reliable news that a fat sheep will pass right in front of our village today. Why not go down and stretch your legs?"
That morning, the Second-in-Command suddenly blocked Su Meiniang as she was heading to her post at the mountain stronghold entrance.
"Alright." This was the first time since her return that the Second-in-Command invited her to take action together.
Su Meiniang felt that refusing might not be the best choice.
Hiding in the grass along the official road, Su Meiniang absentmindedly wondered why other officials traveled in luxurious convoys, while that guy Wen Qian only had a Black Canopied Carriage.
"Big Boss, they're coming, they're coming!" The Second-in-Command whispered excitedly, pushing the unprepared Su Meiniang out with force.
"This tree I planted, this road I opened. If you want to pass this road, leave behind some toll! Corrupt Official, pay up or face death!"
Almost instinctively, Su Meiniang shouted this opening line before realizing something was off.
Why did that Black Canopied Carriage look so familiar?
"No money, but there is a person. Miss, do you want him?"
As the curtain of the carriage was lifted, a pair of Peach Blossom Eyes smiled at the stunned Su Meiniang by the roadside. "Miss, you're unmarried and so am I. How about we complement each other?"
"Alright!"
This time, Su Meiniang didn't hesitate. A bandit leader should have the demeanor of one; even if the other party was a prince, she could always take him back later!
Besides, wasn't this what she had always wanted?
