He concocted a series of excuses to justify himself. The friend didn’t seem overly concerned upon hearing this, knowing Xu Shen was someone who cared about appearances. The reason he made so many excuses was that he feared being laughed at. Besides, have I ever delayed your work before? That’s just absurd! Sure, sometimes I might take leave or something similar, but only after completing what you assigned me.
So let’s be clear: it’s not like I can just take leave whenever I want. Sometimes issues arise that force me to do so; that should be understandable. Moreover, everyone has their own problems to deal with; you can’t impose your life on others."
Xu Shen replied, "You’re being so fussy! What are you planning to do? Either we go or we don’t—why say so much? Make up your mind! I’m getting ready to leave. If you're not coming, then stay here and continue working by yourself. I believe in your ability to handle everything here; I'm sure I'm right about that."
