Hu Xiuying felt an indescribable embarrassment when a boy twenty-five years her junior called her "wife." In a fluster, she jumped up and rushed to his side, twisting one of his ears and exclaimed, "Don’t you dare call me that again!"
"Wife, I won't call you that anymore! It hurts so much!" Hu Zai pleaded, writhing in pain.
"You still dare to call me that?" Furious, Hu Xiuying twisted his ear even harder.
"I didn't call you anything, wife! It hurts! Please let go!" Hu Zai cried out, desperately trying to shield himself with his hands.
Seeing that he was still stubborn, Hu Xiuying felt a mix of shame and anger, her face flushed as she held on tight. "You better not call me that again!"
"Alright, alright! I won’t call you that anymore!" Hu Zai finally relented, wincing from the pain.
Once she released him, Hu Xiuying blushed and said, "And don’t ever call me that again."
"I got it! But if I call you something else in my heart, you can't control that," Hu Zai replied while rubbing his sore ear.
"You..." Hu Xiuying was at a loss for words, her face burning with embarrassment.
On her way home from work, as she rode her bike, Hu Xiuying couldn't shake the feeling of guilt for what had happened between her and Hu Zai. She worried that she might lead him astray; after all, he was so young. But then again, a sense of satisfaction washed over her—she had both money and physical fulfillment.
As she entered the village, she spotted a middle-aged woman in her fifties approaching. Though she was no longer young, she still retained some of her former charm. Dressed in a sleeveless black long dress that showcased her smooth, fair arms, Hu Xiuying recognized her sister-in-law Zhen Yujuan and was momentarily taken aback. "What is this old seductress doing trying to entice my Xiao Lei?" she thought but quickly called out, "Sister-in-law! Where are you going?"
"Oh, it's Xiuying! You just got off work?" Zhen Yujuan greeted back warmly.
Hu Xiuying nodded in response and continued pedaling toward home. Upon reaching her doorstep, she ran into Xiao Lei as he was stepping outside. When he saw her return, he lowered his head and softly said, "Mom, you're back."
Feeling her cheeks flush at the sight of him, Hu Xiuying awkwardly asked, "Where did you go?"
Xiao Lei hesitated before answering, "Just went for a walk."
Hu Xiuying noticed her son's hesitant demeanor and suddenly recalled that she had just seen Sister-in-law Zhen Yujuan heading out of the village. Xiao Lei had also gone out at that moment. A jolt of concern struck her; after all, he was her son, and this was something she had to address. "Are you going to find your Auntie?" she asked.
Xiao Lei was taken aback, his face flushing. "N-no, I'm not," he stammered.
Hu Xiuying spoke firmly, "You should stop seeing your Auntie. No wonder your grades have been dropping so quickly. If you keep fooling around with her, don't expect to get into college. Do you think it's easy for your mother to support your education?" As she spoke, memories of recent events flooded her mind, and she felt a pang of sadness, her eyes misting over.
Xiao Lei replied softly, "I understand, Mom." Without another word, Hu Xiuying pushed the cart into the yard.
As dusk began to settle, Xiao Lei walked along the path outside the village and soon spotted Auntie Zhen Yujuan waiting for him by the roadside. Upon seeing him, she hurriedly asked, "Xiao Lei, what happened last night?"
Xiao Lei glanced around cautiously and whispered, "Let's find a place to talk first."
"Then let's go to our usual spot," Zhen Yujuan suggested eagerly.
"No way, that place isn't safe anymore," Xiao Lei replied, recalling his mother's earlier suspicions about him. He feared she might discover where they were going.
"Then where should we go?" Zhen Yujuan inquired.
After a moment's thought, Xiao Lei proposed, "How about we go to the threshing ground on the other side of the village? There are plenty of straw piles there; I used to play there all the time when I was little."
"Is that safe?" Zhen Yujuan asked cautiously.
"Don't worry; when I was a kid, I could hide there without anyone finding me," Xiao Lei assured her.
"Alright then, let's go there," Zhen Yujuan agreed with relief.
Upon reaching the threshing ground, they found it filled with straw piles taller than a person. They chose a spot behind one of the less conspicuous stacks. "What happened last night, Xiao Lei?" Zhen Yujuan asked as soon as they stopped.
"Do you really want to know?" Xiao Lei replied nonchalantly.
"Come on! Hurry up and tell me; I'm dying of curiosity!" Zhen Yujuan urged impatiently.
"Then you have to call me 'husband' first," Xiao Lei teased.
Zhen Yujuan's face flushed red as she shot him an exasperated look. "You're so naughty! I'm your Auntie!"
"If you don't call me that, I won't say anything," Xiao Lei said playfully while looking at her with a smug expression.
To uncover this mystery sooner rather than later, Zhen Yujuan blushed again and whispered shyly, "Husband."
