"Nine Cloud Dreams" is a classical Chinese novel written in Korean, completed in 1689 by author Kim Wan-chung. It is recognized as the world's first long-form novel of its kind, often referred to as a "refreshing" novel. It is also the world's first long-form "stallion" novel and the first long-form harem novel in the history of Chinese literature. This book represents the first vernacular version of "Nine Cloud Dreams" globally.
Set against the backdrop of the Tang Dynasty in China, the novel narrates the story of Seongjin, a disciple of Master Liuguan, a high monk from India. Seongjin encounters the Eight Fairies of Mount Heng, leading to mutual affection and desires. As a result, they are banished to the mortal realm to experience life's trials. Seongjin is reborn as Shao You, born to Yang the Recluse in Huainan's Daoxiu Prefecture. The Eight Fairies are reborn as Qin Caifeng, Gui Chan Yue, Di Jinghong, Zheng Qiongbai, Jia Chunyun, Princess Lanyang, Shen Niao Yan, and Bai Lingbo—each possessing exceptional talents and beauty.
The narrative centers on Yang Shaoyou's experiences in study, examinations, and official life, detailing his encounters and love affairs with the eight extraordinary women. It highlights his achievements in serving the vassal states and conquering Tubo, showcasing his ability to stabilize the nation through both literary and martial prowess. He wins the heart of his ruler and gains public support, ultimately reaching a high position among officials with eight wives, living harmoniously and happily.
As Yang Shaoyou enjoys his esteemed status during his family's peak prosperity, he suddenly feels the impermanence of worldly affairs. He turns to Zen meditation and enlightenment alongside his nine wives, ultimately embracing Buddhism. The story unfolds with twists and turns, rich in emotion.
